Status: offline 		Ok guys I got a commission to build a 1/6th scale flying model of the Heinkel 111. I am to take it through detailing but not do the painting it will be painted by the owner.

the fun stuff like Dimensions will be

Wingspan  148.33"

Length    107.58

Height    26.25

Will be using Vance Moshur's for Reference


Because there is such a huge difference when enlarging from 89" ws to 148" ws I had to reloft the fuse and will have to redo some of the other stuff to allow for the changes in wood sizes.

for example the sheeting when enlarged comes to abt 1/4" thus I needed to reloft the fuse so that I can more easily adjust the formers for 3/32 sheeting. I am also adding a couple more formers in the fuse for strength to reduce a couple large gaps and make it easier to sheet. I will probably add a few more stringers.

Status: offline 		I would suggest you consider using spruce for the stringers if you haven't already. That will be an unusual plane to say the least. Keep us informed.

Status: offline 		Ok the first thing I did was to bring the plan sheet into solidworks and resize it.

I calculated the length of the fuse which comes to 107.58" and then from origin point drew a line that length. I then added Verticle lines on each end of the point to make things easier when enlarging.

with the photo selected I grabbed one of the corners and enlarged the sheet until the nose and tail of the fuse hit my lines.  By grabbing the corner it increased the length and width proportionally

Status: offline 		Now when I traced things I automatically adjusted for the proper wood sizes.

I started by using the Outer lines as my guide as those will never change the outline is the outline. 

I then used the offset tool and set it to 3/32" which then gave me the proper dimension for the sheeting thickness.

As you can see from the Below Pic it was off by quite a bit due to the resizing.

Status: offline 		No Need for Spruce stringers that's old school thinking more wood and weight makes a stronger plane. Stringers arent used for anything but to hold the formers in place til the sheeting goes on and to give more surface area for the sheeting. So why add unnecessary weight and costs by going with spruce.

After I got all the lines set properly and all the wood thicknesses I then Lofted the Fuse.

Status: offline 		I got the sheeting made and the tail cone made along with the Fuse Formers. I will be working on the Gondola and the turrets since they should be fast and easy and give me reference for Scale Mechanisms etc.

Status: offline 		I finished Lofting the fin. I wanted to Enlarge Vance's plan but there is a lot of stuff missing and the plans dont do well for just enlarging so I am doing this from scratch using some of his plans for reference.

Status: offline 		Ok  Things have changed slightly. I will be doing the H-22 version for a V1 flying platform and a Mistel Bomber version. I only know of the JU-88 as the mistel so if anyone has any information on an HE-111 Mistel could use some help there

I went through tons of books drawings and websites to find how the airfoils were and for the most part I am satisfied with what I have some up with.

It seems the center section with the nacelles the ribs had a guppy like belly to them and from the inner panel to the tip it transitioned from the guppy rib into a symmetrical rib at the tip.

Secondly the transition from the center section to the tip dihedral isnt a sharp transition like on most planes but a nice smooth curve from the flat section up into the dihedral.

So Now I am starting setting up my loft on the wings and when I get that done will post some more pics. it will be one of my more challenging lofts.

Also the nacelles follow the angle of the dihedral but the landing gear is 90 deg to the ground so that will be interesting to see how all that retraction is going to take place.


I was able to get the center section to loft to my satisfaction on a flat plane and now I have to incorporate Dihedral.  Now in the Dihedral there isn't a sharp bend it is swept upwards over a curve. I looked at vance's plans and he doesn't show a front view or anything on the Dihedral. so I have some good drawings from one of my books I need to enlarge and trace this morning then I can set up the Loft and away we go.

Status: offline 		Ok I got an initial Loft that I like finished. You will see from the last picture the Yellow lines which are the former shapes. I didn't bother putting them at the proper angles until I was able to get the loft to finally work. For those of you fanatics of Solidworks I will show a trick as to how I was able to finally get it working.

Remember when you look at the front view it looks wonky and that is only because I haven't angled the ribs yet.

Status: offline 		OK Here is where the problem always lies with lofts and that is the guide curves. if you don't have them in just the right place then the entire loft wonks out on you.  Normally I can do it with using regular planes because of washout and straight lines of the leading and training edges.

With the shape of this wing I had to come up with a different way to do it. So I used a top view of the wing. the first thing I did was to create a new sketch on the top plane, Next I created the curving Dihedral on the right plane. I set the Dihedral so that it was located on where the center of each rib was.

Once that was finished I used project Curve which took the 2 sketches and created a new intersected curve which you can see as the blue line. this takes the flat shape of the trailing edge and bends it to match the shape of the dihedral.

Status: offline 		Ok I got the new planes made for the ribs and set them at their proper angles. Next is time to reloft the wing and work on the Nacelles.

the wing is re-lofted and I lofted the Nacelles and the Cowls. I still have to loft the intakes on the cowls etc but before I do that I want to work on finishing up the fuse.

Ok that catches this thread up. Wife had toi goto ER for chest pains and I came home to let dog out and going back dunno how much will get finished tonight but tomorrow for sure be back at it

Status: offline 		Well finally got home from hospital abt hour ago they did a bazillion tests and finally after 9 hrs at er said wife was ok. so I got the fuse relofted to the proper length, so now I will work on the nose section.

Status: offline 		I got the Nose Glass Rough Lofted. There are still some spots that need flattened on the bottom for the flat panels But it will give me an Idea on how everything is looking. I have the outlines showing so I can verify that my loft followed the proper shape.

Have you looked at the original Moshur outlines for accuracy? The forward canopy lines just don't look right to me, which usually makes me nervous about the overall plan.

Status: offline 		yes martin the whole outlines are traced from vances plans. the problem also is that Vances and the ones you posted arent the H-22 as the H-22 has the front gunner position with the slide canopy not a turret.

I will post a couple pics of the H-22 shortly. thanks those are nice 3 views.  look like they might be from Monografie Lotnicze 012 Heinkel He-111.

Status: offline 		Ok I am trying to find the pic I had of the H-22 with the sliding canopy gunner instead of turret I have 12 books so might take a bit. the H-22 does have the turret I was wrong but I think there were 2 variants of the H-22 gunner. Also I think I know why you are getting screwed up on my nose piece.

Just behind where I show the glass part I made the upper half of the fuse is a glass canopy too. But since where I did my seperate glass piece that is where they seperated the nose part from the fuselage. thus I lofted it seperately and just havent cut the glass windows out yet. but if you look at my lofts and the grey outlines overlayerd they match perfectly with the shape. I went and looked them over and dont see any difference in what I did and the ref photos.

Status: offline 		Just you it had a crazy Dihedral. but I havent broken it up much yet with all the gizmos on the nacelles. 

Remember this is just a rough workout of lofts etc I will still have to make some adjustments. I am just getting all the pieces made and put together then I will start tweaking things.

I just need to get something together for the customer to look at and go from there.
