Chris, love the thread. Will use in the future for my giant scale .

Ref in post 1. Help refresh my memory. Doesn't F4U-5NL stand for "N" for night fighter, and thus had a radome on the starboard wing.
And "L" for weatherized (against the cold) as used off of Korea.

I did not see a radome in the fly-by. Was it just not installed?

Love the beauty and speed of the Corsair.

R, Mike

Thanks, I wish more of this kind of info was out there so thats why I make these threads. Next one will be the P-47.

This particular 5NL was not restored to its original configuration and so the radome is missing. The wind sheild does have the heating element, exhaust glare shield and cannon flash guards. This Corsair was built after WWII and was never in combat as far as I was told. Records suggest it was damaged in a carrier landing then repaired and exported. It was later purchased and imported to the US then restored to flying condition and modified with the rear jump seat.

Its a coffin in that back seat I can tell you. Once we got in and the engine was running I basically said OK this is it if anything happens just ride it out and hope for the best. It made me a little nervous thinking about the gas tank just in front of the instrument panel. We did a couple loops and rolls, it was awesome. Very smooth plane and the softest landing thanks to the long travel carrier suspension. Check that off the bucket list!

Here's a few shots of a Corsair I took a few years ago. The first four pictures I believe are of a night fighter with raydome on starboard (right) wing, the last one was at an air show in Camarillo California.

Here's an F2G-1 Super Corsair. The only thing not original on this airplane is the paint. It's airworthy, too. One of two surviving examples.

Even though Bob Odegaard babied the airplane and never pushed it very hard, it still killed him. Nothing can be taken for granted with 65 year old high-powered fighters.

The red super belongs to Ron Pratte and the pilot is Larry Perkins. Ive met Larry, he also flies RC, and he visits our club field. That Corsair had an in flight engine problem that forced Larry to do an emergency air start 3 times in one flight! He flies Rons Mustang as well.

The red one was originally restored by Bob Odegaard. He flew it extensively before selling it. That makes it all the more surprising to me that he was killed in his later restoration, the blue one.

Look for a 2008 movie titled "Thunder over Reno". As movies go, "Thunder" is an absolute steaming turd of a movie. The plot and the acting leave much to be desired and at times are downright laughable. What makes it worth not only watching, but buying as well, is the footage of some really nice warbirds rounding the pylons at Reno. None of the footage is computer-generated and most of it is air-to-air. Bob Odegaard not only put up much of the money to make the movie, he flew his red F2G in it and even played one of the characters. The F2G was the star.

I almost forgot, the late Jimmy Leeward was also in that movie.

I also volunteer at Military Aviation Museum in Virginia Beach VA.

http://www.militaryaviationmuseum.org/

Every May there is a WW-II airshow: “Warbirds over the Beach.”

The Museum's Corsair (FG-1D) was delivered in May of 1945, and spent much of it’s military career in storage, being one of the lowest time Corsairs known. The “Skull and Bones” livery is that of Norfolk-born Ray Beacham, who flew with the famous VF-17 in the Pacific.

the last Picture is the Corsair's Pilot " OB" Obrien. He is now 82-83 yrs old. He first flew F4U-4's in Korea. Picture is in front of the SNJ ride I had earned after 500 volunteer hours. He is a GOD!

Here are some Corsairs on Vella Lavella with a F4F Wildcat on the end. The pic is dated 15 Dec 43:

F4Us at Vella15 Dec 43

The first one is “Lonesome Polecat”, F4U-1 Bureau Number 17465 flown by Lieutenant Merl W. “Butch” Davenport.
The second one looks like #833 (BuNo 17833?). If so, this one was ultimately lost on a ferry flight due to a tropical storm with 22 other Corsairs from VMF-422.

Do you have more Time Life photos or whomever the source is for these color photos? Id like to see the wear and bleached out paint on these a little better. If this photos is a larger file than posted let me know if I can obtain a copy please. Great photo!

I grew up around these fighters because my dad flew them in WW-II and the Korean War.  I used to hang around the hangars all the time, and pester the ground crews.  Anywy, I have quite a few photos, mostly from the Korean War, and I'll post a few here.

Chris, Here's the full size one that I have on my site:

Here are more Life pictures but they're B&W: f4ucorsair.freeforums.org/life-magazine-pictures-t25.html

I'll have to search for some color ones though.
Here's a rare one:

I am guessing that the last pic was taken after they righted the Corsair from being flipped. Nice pics
