Can anyone tell me if the backup battery in a JR PCM10X is draining all the time or does it only drain when the main battery is removed/flat?

Also can the data be retained during backup replacement by the main battery?

The lithium cell supplies the memory when the set is switched off. However, the onboard capacitor will supply sufficient power for a couple of days before the cell kicks in

Yes it is quite normal for all memories to be safe

As in post #2, provided a JR Tx is turned on for a few moments every second day, the capacitor saves drain on the battery.
This will provide 3<5 years life for the on board Lithium button cell but even 7 years has been realised by frequent users.
If replacing the button cell is not done correctly, then user will loose their model data, the following may assist:

Good photos and schematics to use a cell holder rather than hard solder to board
