 Howdy all,
Well, the electrix RC boost I bought this weekend to it's maiden and perhaps final drive.  After 5 min of driving it up and down the road, it stopped.  I walked up to it and could smell melting plastic, which is generally not a good thing.  I could then see smoke wafting up from the speed control.  Turned it off and removed the battery, which as it turns out may have been the source of the smoke.  I actually threw the battery since the plastic was melting off and it was smoking.  It is probably still out there in the gravel smoking.  The black wire to the battery has melted off the speed control.  Well, that's not good....  Anyhoo, its only 2 days old and I have sent a message off to electrix to notify them of the issue.
Phil

That's too bad. Was the chassis damaged by the heat?
Myself, I've had poor luck with horizon brand electronics(losi and electrix are owned by horizon). Every piece of electronic in my losi mini baja quit working in a little over a year and I found out the hard way that Losi's blue mini peak charger doesn't stop charging when the battery is full. Accidentally left it charging my VMG overnight and found an burned nimh and a badly warped battery box the next morning.

I had a ecx on my torment burn up. ECX (or horizon I should say) replaced it for free.

You should be able to have them replace the battery and ESC for you.

It kinda sounds like the battery connector shorted out. That would cause both the battery and the ESC to fry.

If they send you replacements, Id recommend upgrading the battery and speed control plugs to deans or traxxas plugs. The white tamiya plugs on those are really pretty sucky.

even low cost Redcat models no longer have tamiya plugs. The twisters have deans copies and the other have 4.0mm banana plugs.

But if you find the warrenty form for the ECX and fill it out you should be taken care of.

Good news. All they required were some pics of the carnage and a new battery and ESC are on the way.  The grass was a little wet that day so I wonder if the moisture got to the battery.  It was no impressive amount of moisture, so not clue whether it was the cause or not.  Thanks to all for the help and I will look into upgrading the plugs to Traxxas or Dean.  Where is a reasonable place to buy those pieces?

Local hobby store.  Don't forget, you'll need one for your charger too.  Hope you have a good, hot, soldering iron. Be VERY careful on exposed wire length, it needs to be short and accurate so as not to extend beyond the line marked on the contacts. You may also want to "dry run" your soldering setup.  Those contacts hold heat a long time, so it takes a while for the solder to solidify, and you do not want to move the wire while it is cooling.  I usually do this on a piece of wood, and I have some weights to hold the contact and wire in place so it doesn't move while soldering/cooling, and you cannot hold either one by hand, those things get HOT.
