Guys,
I am in the stage of finishing my J3 Cub and the engine will be an Enya 46 4-c.

I was adviced by a fellow rc modeller to use the hottest glowplug from the Enya range like the number 3,
and not the OS type F.

What do you suggest me to do ?

Best,
Kostas

G'day The Enya #3 is the plug that Enya intended be used and should work fine. But the OS F will too and the new Enya F (four stroke) will also. We have been using the Enya #3 in an ASP 91 four stroke here at my club recently and it works well. I think there is one in my Enya 53 too.

Cheers

I used Fox idlebar plugs in my 60-4C with good results as well. I now use Enya #3 plugs though.

I use OS F plugs for all my 4-strokes and Super Tiger 2-stroks. Be aware, OS lists the F plug as a medium heat range plug but it works so well.

If an OS F plug fits (it has an extended nose and wont fit some applications like the VT series four strokes) a Merlin 2009 2010 and 2011 will fit. That will give you 3 different heat ranges of four stroke plug to play with.

I only carry two types of plug : OS F and Enya Nr3.
I use these plugs for all applications, 4 and 2 stroke.
You can go wrong.

G'day Kostas. If you have an OS F, then I would try it. I am pretty sure it will be fine. I use OS F plugs in nearly all of my four strokes - OS, Saito, Enya and Laser.

On a slightly different subject, I have recently put Enya #3 plugs into engines which were not running well and they really sorted the engines out. One was a Super Tigre (Chinese) 51 which would idle fine but would hesitate badly when I attempted to throttle it up. Initially I put an OS F in it and it was much happier and I flew it like this but then I tried the Enya #3 and it was even better and now runs like the proverbial Swiss watch. Another success was an ASP 91. We ran out of OS F plugs so we put an Enya #3 in it. It works perfectly and the engine is running really well. It is inverted too.

I have several Merlin 2003HD plugs which I have used in a Jett 46. I must try one of them too.

Cheers

Mike in Oz

The 2003HD is a hot 2 stroke plug, the Merlin 2009,10,11 are specifically designed as 4 stroke plugs with the extended nose.

Thank's so much for your suggestions. I will definately try the type F from O.S.,
but also could you please tell me where can I find the Enya glowplugs...?

G'day Kostas

I am in Australia. Here you can buy them from a certain very large auction site. You can also get them from Enya directly (and parts for the engine too). Do a search for Enya Engines and you should find Enya Metal Products in Tokyo. Ken Enya is very helpful if you send him an email.

I also have an Enya 46 though it is in pieces as it needs new bearings. It was in a Goldberg Cub at one stage and flew it well. I also have the following Enya four strokes - 36, 41 diesel and 53. I also have some two strokes as well (25SS, 40SS, 45SS, 45CX and 60CX). Enyas are great engines.

Cheers

If you don't already have one, get an Enya remote glow plug clip. Most aftermarket remote clips will not clip on tight (or at all) to the plug. Personally, putting a glow driver on an Enya 4-stroke and then removing it while the engine is running is downright scary.

I found the OS F plugs to give close to the same top rpm as a couple other plugs I've tried, but the engine had to idle roughly 400-500rpm faster or it would quit. The hotter the better in a 4-stroke.

G'day

I agree about the remote glow plug clip. It is supplied with the engines these days but was not back when the 46 was made. My 36 and 53 both have them and they work really well. Otherwise you need to use alligator clips or some other form of glow plug connector as the plug points forward towards (and very close to) the prop.

Cheers

Mike in Oz

I consider the remote glow plug clip a requirement, especially if you use APC props.

Ah thank's for the suggestion on using a glowplug ignitor.
I will use one of these:

It works good on my Saito FA-80.

It may not fit Enya glow plugs well if you use them. It should be okay, but you won't know until you try it.
