ok, time to glue in the main spar wing tubes. because the receiver tube holes were done by hand one at a time, i have to assume they are slightly off. therefore, the model must be jigged up and set properly. i used the diehedral brace to make a small balsa part that will help. i set the fuse to zero, then the wings to zero with the balsa dihedral shim. then the tubes were tack glued into place. i made balsa blocks that also will assist in the properly holding of the receiver tubes too.

here are the additional balsa blocks. i had some gapping in the ply rib too. this was from some grinding needed to get everyhing to zero. once a balsa block was glued to one side, i used epoxy with milled fiber to fill the gap before applying the second balsa block on the other side of the rib.

i started the process of webbing the trailing edge. boy, thats fun. same thing over and over. at least it is fast and easy. i added triangle stock on the lite ply ribs only.

getting an early look at the landing gear situation. you have to cut the lower main spar for the gear to close. no problem. i made a balsa template of a horshoe shape. this will tie one side to the other. however, the actual brace will be made of ply with carbon sandwiched in. it will also go outboard one more rib for strength. this is also the reason for the second smaller wing tube. it goes all the way to the second nacelle. she should be more then strong enough.

Barry, besides being great builders, both Frank and you seem to have the passion to work several hours per day for sustained periods.

I guess the two qualities are kinda synergistic

I've given up saying "i'll be like that someday." (I don't believe myself anymore)

He's got the aluminum paint on, doing the trim stripes.

Look closely at picture 4, you can see the laser that helps hold a vertical (or whatever) line

Decals came in from Callie tonight and we dry-fitted them and made some adjustments

Awesome detail work on the Panther.  But I think you over did it with all the scale looking wires and tubes and doohickies in the front! The nose cone is just going to cover it all up anyway     Looks great, Bro' !

I was honored to assist in final assembly and CG determination with Frank's 14 ft'er today

AND placement of the nose art!

All he needs now is 20 oz of lead in the nose and some ground trials!

Carburation and (we hoped) maiden flight day for Frank's gorgeous B-29: DINA MIGHT

Sadly, DLE-20 #3 has something wrong with the carb: high end needle would NOT lean out, so the flight didn't happen, but overall a fun day in the sun with no damage done except maybe a highly frustrated flight engineer!

Many thanks to Denny Goodrich for help with the video. Without his professional help on edit and production, it would be un-watchable. Proof that even broken-wing birds can sometimes be vital to a mission. (Right, Mr Yeager?)

And to Dwayne Fosseen for the flat, smooth, DRY private field, and his hard-won experience as the giant B-29 pioneer of the Midwest

As you can hear and see, the DLE's ran flawlesly during the flight. By that time, Frank had switched them to a synthetic mix.

What you do not see is the 3-5 hours Frank El Perfeccionista spent breaking them in and tuning them. Just playing gofer for that process was an advanced degree in Small Engine Management for me.

There is a Matchbox on the single throttle channel and "homemade" choke mechanisms that required reversing the stock choke levers to space them from the throttles.

The troublesome DLE-20 #3 was replaced entirely after carburation day

The ONLY damage we could find after maiden was one on the Kevlar nosegear steering cables snapped at its forward attach point.

Next Mission: Bombing, Gear Retraction and Cowls!
