In all of my years of flying RC... I never once saw an ICDF that could get off a paved runway in a reasonable amount of time. Sure... once they got up, made a turn, and put the nose down... they would build speed. AND... they all landed ''Heavy''. AND... for the price tag of the high output engines, and fans... never once did I think.... ''I need one of them!!''

You then never got a chance to see any of the BVM fleet. Aggressor and Vipers were doing 200+ mph. Mavericks where in the 180+ range. My dad's twin BVM phantom was clocked at 190+ the same weekend Garland Hamilton was clocked doing 249. And JMP's starfire was just almost as fast as the BVM stuff

I understand ICDF was not as easy as a turbine. You needed to understand what you were doing (which by the way, was really really really fun and challenging), so they were definitely not for everyone.
But what is not true are the myths that remained after they were basically gone: They were super powerful, they were really fast, they were super fun, and believe it or not, if you knew what you were doing, had a remote needle valve that you knew how to operate, and used quality fuel, they were almost as reliable as turbines.

But they went away for some reason(in general I think most would agree). the mess maybe. thrown con-rods, going through glow plugs like they were going out of style and ability to get good fuel may have been some of the deterrants. None of the hobby shops around here sold Wildcat. I ran my BVM 0.91 about one year ago and still ran great but opted for electric instead. Those motors are beasts.

Agree... there are better options today. Just trying to say that they were not the underpowered unreliable dogs people think they were.

The only way I can get a turbine is if I get a JetJoe or buy a used turbine at a givaway price. I got a killer package deal on two Regal Eagles and a Y/A A-4 along with 2 Dynajet fans and a Byrojet fan with 2 OS .91s and I think he said a K&B 7.5 so that is what I will be going with for now. I am going to give the one Eagle to my little brother for his Xmass and Bday as his Bday is in Jan. I really love flying with my lil Bro. We have the best times at the field. I will say that I got all this cheap enough I could afford it, otherwise it wouldnt be happening. I was planning to buy the stuff new and was looking at taking my entire rc budjet for the next 4 months just to do one jet and now I will be able to do 3 possibly 4 for that same money. Or I could buy a single turbine and have no plane to put it in. Hmmmmmm HARD CHOICE!

Man this is really killing me. I have not been able to stop thinking about a turbine conversion on the A-4 for the last 3 days. I keep telling myself if I save up a bit every week, I could have one for it by the time I am ready for it to go in. I wonder how hard it would be to get a dummy turbine to use for mocking everything up so I could basically have the plane built and ready for it when I can afford one.

RCaircraft nut,
Please be advised that an  AMA turbine waiver is required to "operate" a turbine at any AMA chartered club flying site.  The waiver types may be for fixed wing, rotary wing (helis) or controline models-refer to the Safety Regs for Model Aircraft Powered by Gas Turbines- available on AMA's website: Doc # 501. The airframe, pilot and flightline requirements are all described within this document along with the waiver application process.  One of the fixed wing waiver pre-requsites is for the applicant to have accomplished 50 flights on a high performance model-capable of sustained speeds of 100 + MPH.  Note that your Jett-powered screaming demons would qualify, provided that you can prove the 50 flight requirement, ie, a log book.
Either the Regal Eagle or Y/A A-4 would provide valuable true jet-like flying experience.  The A-4 can be initially built and flown as a ICDF and later converted to turbine power.  I'd recommend one of the smaller/lighter turbines in the 10-12 lb thrust range to keep the weight down in this model.
The waiver flight test must be performed with a turbine-powered model but you can gain flying experience via a buddy box under an experienced turbine pilot.  All this is spelled out in the AMA turbine safety regs document.  The nitro-powered DFs are most suitable  to becoming a successful turbine model pilot.

I knew about the need for the waiver but hadn't looked into the requirements yet. Thx for the info.

Getting a turbine waiver is a relatively simple affair assuming someone with your experience level combined with living in a relatively populated area with turbine guys within driving distance. Don't let it deter you. Have a chat with the local turbine guys and specifically ask them for their assistance in getting you checked out and waivered if you would like to consider this avenue. A lot of the "homework" as written out in the AMA regs are relatively simple when you have those in the know helping you.

rcaircraftnut,
The AMA document pertaining to turbine safety  regs is AMA Doc # 510-A,  found under the Documents Tab of: www.modelaircraft.org.   All turbine-relevant docs are found nearby and are worth reading/downloading for reference.
Your experience with high performance engines will transfer over to nitro-powered glow DF with regards to operation and maintenance.  Don't be afraid to ask for assistance on this forum or directly to anyone with glow DF experience.  Let us know when you collect the models/fans/engines. There are some great bargains out there but be careful of what you buy.
Good luck in all this and welcome to the jet world.

Art ARRO
