I bought some Jet stuff from a guy, and he gave me a 5 gal jug of Kero. He said it had a quart of PB turbine oil in it. BUT... before I do anything with this fuel... I need to know... does the BP oil have a color?

I know the Shell 500 was amber.... but the DTE that I started using this year was clear.

Status: offline 		Yes it has an amber color to it. I have used BP, Mobil, Aeroshell, Exxon. The turbine oils all have some color to them.

Status: offline 		Exxon 2380 is pretty much clear(has a slight purple tint). I used to hate chasing oil leaks when the plane had that stuff. I know BP makes the same stuff but not sure if its the same color.

Status: offline 		Bp is clear. You can barely see a purple tint through when poured straight out of the can.

If it was me and i wasnt 100% sure on the status of the fuel mix, i wouldnt chance it. Kero and oill is cheap compared to bearings

Well................


That's what my thoughts were. BUT... I don't want to burn it in my shop heater if it has something that will be toxic either. I wish I still had my Diesel truck. I'd just pour it in the tank. (lol)

So the question is... what to do with it??

I used some left over jet fuel for weed killer. It works great. The EPA probably wont like that much but heck I have seen some old hawkers leak more fuel just sitting over night on the ramp then I poured along a fence to kill weeds.

Status: offline 		It is very easy... pour a little on a clear glass container and see the sun through it. It should look "oily" (some colors). Compare to a straight kero sample and you will see the difference. and even if the oil is clear, if you leave it in the sun for a few hours it will turn brownish

if you are still uncomfortable, just add another can of oil. It won't hurt the engine

Status: offline 		I know this has been beaten to death elsewhere as far as mixing your own (or so I recall) but can you make smoke oil out of "suspect" or old kerosene? Not so much of a "show smoke" but as practice smoke for any given Sunday... I think you could add some baby oil or vegetable oil to decrease the flammability and increase the flash point a bit and you'd have the value of your kero back in your pocket compared to what smoke oil costs. Just one possible other use for the stuff.

All of the turbine oils look clear when you are pouring them from the can. Assuming you are running the clear kero, take a sample of the " mixed" kero and put it in a glass jar then compare it with "non" mixed clear kero. There will be a distinct color difference between the two.

Status: offline 		Uhhh ok maybe it mixes to a different color I thought the question was if it's clear or not.

Plus if you don't know don't use it! Fuel and oil is cheap. I don't have an RC turbine so I'm not a expert or even a noob.

Nope... not at all. He was a nice guy, and there isn't a reason to not believe him. But... I know I've questioned myself a bunch of times... and I just don't want to loose a turbine by trying to salvage $20 worth of fuel. And... as above, if there is oil in it... I don't want to poison myself by using it in a shop heater.

Now... if it's like AeroShell 500... it's very dark, and it's easy to tell if the oil is in it.

Really? I've only used a few cans before switching to DTE... but mine were all very dark. (like new car motor oil)
