Thanks for your input on the 1/64" ply. I was just to get to that. Would 1/32" too heavy?
I got the framework done today, and cap strips next.
Are you trying to sand the fin to an airfoil shape, or just getting the widest area of the fin in about the middle?

Thanks in advance,
Greg

Having a hard core [plywood] surrounded by soft material [balsa] is backwards in principal to how composite construction is usually configured.
In nature, the insects have the hard shell / soft interior and are 50 times stronger pound for pound than the vertebrates.
Personally, I'd use 1/4" thick balsa and cut a 1/64" slit along the perimeter of the fins and inlay 1/64" plywood. from there, sand the perimeter to a knife edge.
This slitting tool is made with layers of plywood. A Xacto blade is clamped between the inner layers. This tool is made to slit 1/4" thick balsa so that it will accept thin strips of 1/64" ply.
Vic's process with the dremel razor saw wheel on a drill press would be even easier.
I just sand approximately the outer 3/4" along the perimeter to a pleasing shape. It really helps to have some 60 grit on a block to rough out the taper, but watch your progress carefully..! Switch to 80 for final shaping, then 150, 220, 320 to remove the deep scratches until the wood almost shines. My rookie mistakes are always spending too much time with the heavy grit and running out of wood before all the scratches get rubbed out.

I have a YS 45 I will probably be putting in one of my Diamond Dusts after I get use to the speed.

Greg

You could always put it in now and govern top speed by prop choice. Start with a 10-6 for example, then move to 9" higher pitch props.

There are a few questions I still have on the DD.
Is it necessary to sand an angle to the top of the ailerons? The trailing edge of the ailerons is already less than 1/8" wide. If this angle is sanded on the aileron the trailing edge will be a sharp edge.
Are the throws for low rate of 3/8" up and down, and high rates 3/4"+ up and down for high rates correct? This seems excessive for this type of plane. For the first flight would you reduce these throws?
If the vertical fin is made of 1/4" balsa, is there a need to fiberglass it with 2 oz cloth?

MJD...I think I'll try out the 32SX first. More maneuverable and enough speed for me. I have never flown a plane like this, thus the concern about the throws.

Control throws of 1/8" for roll and 1/4" for pitch are enough for me. We're talking about the throws from either side of center.
Sharp trailing edge elevons that flow with the overall shape of the airfoil are supposedly the fastest...but with a DD you could leave the trailing edges blunt [1/8"] and it will work and look just fine.

I thought that seemed like a lot of throw on a plane like the DD.
As far as the trailing edge, I think I'll sand some off to thin the trailing edge about half the thickness. On the second one I build I'll try it with a knife edge. The picture in the building instructions shows an end view of the elevon, and it looked like the stock size in the kit.

If I use 1/4" balsa, do I still need to glass the vertical fins?

I am including pics of my project.

Thanks for your reply,
Greg

You will just have to judge how the fins feel to you after they've been glued on. It's a judgement call that I can't do from my chair. It really is a superior job of carpentry if you can pass the bottom edge of the fins down to the BOTTOM sheeting and glue a cleat down there to fortify the intersection between the fin and the bottom sheeting. Once that is done, then install the TOP SIDE sheeting around where the fin passes through. Once you get the fins nailed in good, then use your hands to see how strong they feel. The decision to go with FG is not a big deal if you have experience..but can be a big deal if you are just learning.
As for the elevon linkage, use a hardware kit that is tall enough to make your connection to the clevis at least 1 1/8" above the surfave of the elevon. This way you can set the radio for 100% servo travel and dial in the proper amount of control throw mechanically. This will give the best control resolution and leverage for the servos to work with.

You will just have to see how much flex the fins have and make your judgement call.
For elevon hardware I like to use the kit that has fairly long screws that serve as the control horns. The screws have a pair of base plates that sandwich the control surface and the whole works is held tight with a nut. I set the linkage so that the clevis pivots about 1 1/8" to 1 1/4" above the elevon. This allows me to set the servo travel at the radio as close to 100% as possible. This gives the servo max leverage and the pilot gets good control resolution.

Well, Bad news. Magneto is dead. I hit a tree out at our field yesterday. Magneto was my first Prototype for an open airframe electric Delta. Moving on to Prototype Number two.

On a positive note, I outfitted Batman with a Jett Tuned Muffler. Batman is officially fast!

Do you remember the Hypers your dad Dan and Mac used to have? it was a foam core wing that Mac used to sell as a short kit, I remember these being super fast in the 90s

Wow nice collection of DD you have there! I miss my two I used to have. Looking to start another one if I can get hold of my buddies plans. Next is finding a proper pipe for my MVVS GRRT 40 FAI.. So far have not had any luck on the pipe. Hope to find something that may work. Possible from Jett or Nelson or something similar for rear exhaust. I really have the bug to go fast again. Been tinkering in electrics for while but ready for the sound and smell of nitro again.

Macs has a pipe and header but they are not cheap. They are much better made than the MVVS pot metal ones.

Yeah those pipe looked like spun aluminum. The pipe clipped directly to the engine. There was more header so was thinking something from Nelson. I'll have to see if Macs has anything like that. I hope so, I'm ready to fire up the engine again

Well Iron Man is finished. Modified DD with a 2 inch Center Single Fin with Rudder. Powered by a TT Pro .36 with Jett Pipe. I can't wait to fly it.

This is the First Airplane build for 2013. This is called the Angel (Prototype #2). a 32 1/2 wingspan electric Delta designed by me and Team Stevens as a whole for electic set-up 3-6S. This is my brother Mike holding Angel after the initial frame-up.

Excellent build thread..!
I've never tried a DD with rudder, that's on the "to-do" list.
Have you ever put one into such a fast, tight spin that the rudder couldn't stop it...?

No, but I'm looking forward to trying. The trick is getting a servo on it strong enough to get full deflection. I have a smaller Delta called the "Cat's Meow" that, on a windy day, will climb while flat spinning.
