I'm moving away from glow, towards gasoline engines, and I have a 77" P-47 that currently has a 1.80 Moki on the nose. To be honest, I haven't flown it, because I suspected the Moki was not enough engine. I have access to a Zenoah G62, that I'm considering using, but now I'm feeling I'll have too much engine. The plane weighs 20lbs, and is a kit built or scratch built, not sure of the maker. It is covered in fabric and dope. I bought the plane used, and had one of my flying buddies rework it in the same style it was originally built with, ie fabric/dope. It is one of my favorite planes, but, as I said, I have not flown it because I have felt that the Moki was not enough engine. So, guys, tell me.....is the Moki enough..and the G62 too much, or is the G62 the right engine, and the Moki too small? I have no idea as to what engine was originally on it. I appreciate any advice you guys might be willing to share, but please be kind, as I know this may be a stupid question to some of you.

I would say the 1.80 is on the bleeding edge at 20lbs. If it is propped and tuned right it should fly it scale but you probably won't have much in reserve.
The G62 would be overkill for that size plane in my opinion. The G62 weighs a little over 5lbs and the Moki weighs about 3lbs. If you had a G38 I would say that would fly it scale as well but with a bit more reserve or a G45. Those weigh about 4.5 lbs. Electronic ignition versions would reduce  some weight .
I just finished a 1/3 scale RV3  stick-built , cloth&dope and put a G62 on it and installed electronics,etc..to balance it out. All up weight is 30lbs with no added tail weight and it pulls it around with plenty of  extra power. I don't think you would be able to move things around enough to balance it out using the G62 without adding a lot of dead tail weight.

I can switch some engines around and come up with a G38, and I may have a DLE 55 after next weekend, if a trade goes as I hope it will. I haven't checked the weight of the DLE55. Do you happen to have that info nearby?

My personal opinion is that the 1.80 will probably fly it fine unless you want blistering performance. I have a couple of friends who are flying the Hangar 9 82 inch span P-47 at around 18 pounds, one with a Moki 1.50 and the other with a 1.80, and the performance is pretty spectacular. Both of them will easily outperform the same airplane powered by a G-38. A well tuned Moki is something of a "sleeper" in my opinion and you may be suprised at what it will do. My .02 cents of course.

I think the best solution is to go ahead and maiden it as it is . I have been avoiding this for some time now. If it goes in, it will ruin my day. It isn't the nicest warbird there is, but it is the nicest one I own. Will keep you guys posted. The fellow that rebuilt it is planning to fly a big kitbuilt AT-6 Texan he just completed. I'll try and schedule my maiden at the same time...wish me luck guys.

The Moki 1.8 should fly it fine. Mine is a bit particular, fresh 5% fuel, (0% is ok too), large fuel lines, needle set correctly, fresh glow plug for a bit of added insurance. They are strong runners when set up right. I have seen numerous guys trying to run these Moki's with 10% fuel and time after time they have dead stick landings for overheating the engine.

With a G-62, you most likely will have to add quite a bit of lead to the tail. My Yellow Aircraft P-47 had a G-62 it the nose, and it balanced perfectly. It was very fast at 24 pounds.
I would go with a DLE 55 rear carb and with the rear muffler. It will fit very nicely and weighs just slightly more than the Moki. It will rip too.

OK, here's what I've done. I swapped some engines around and was able to put a Moki 2.10 in place of the 1.80. I plan to fly it this way, and then go from there. I believe the 2.10 will pull it OK. I will keep you guys informed. Thanks for all the advice.

I'm curious. I picked up a nice condition US 41 gas engine today at a swap meet. I wonder how well it would fly the P-47...?

Can't go wrong with a Quadra on a warbird. The Quadra 42 (US41) should fly it fine.

I got an extra engine with the 41, that needs a coil, or needs to be converted to electronic ignition. Any ideas?

Never mind....I pulled the sparkplug out, and held it against the engine while I spun it with my starter.....pretty blue spark ....I must be living right...the seller said that it needed a new coil. I plan to put it on a test stand tomorrow and see if it runs. Will let you guys know.

Thanks for the link. Hopefully I won't need it. I'm gonna put it through it's paces tomorrow, and if the coil is the least bit bad, I'll find out.

Ralph Cunningham probably has a big box  full of coils from his conversions too.

I needed one a few years ago and I either called Ralph or CH ignitions and got one. They will want to know the color of the little ring where the spark plug wire fits into the coil to ID it. Some are clear  or colored to ID what engine(s) they go on .

Both the Moki 1.80 and 2.10 will be OVERKILL for that airframe! They will work fine though and save you from having to add nose weight. I owned a Platt Zero (80" WS) that weighed in at 24#'s. With an O.S. 1.60 on board it was a bullet with a XOAR 17 x 10 bolted to the front.

We also have had several of the Hangar 9 P-47 ARF's at right around 20#'s. One had the Evolution 35 and the newest one we have has the Evolution 40. Both performed quite well.

We just sold a Top Flite P-47 with a G-62 that weighed 35#'s! It also was a bullet.

Can you tell we dig P-47's? We actually had 7 at the shop a few months ago, all ready to fly. From foamies to 400cc radial powered Monsters!

Lastly, we are flying a "small" Ziroli P-47 (72" WS) with a G-38. It's a bit heavy at 27-28#'s but flies like a dream...

Plus 1 on the P-47! I have 4 now and am a confirmed fan. As a kid, I adored the P-51, but after flying the 47's, I have a new favorite!

Guys, maybe you can help me again. I have never been able to identify the maker of the kit, or even if it is a kit(maybe scratchbuilt?)Who made a 77" P-47? I will get some photos later today.

The G62 is too heavy and you will have to add more weight to get the right balance. You alternate choice of a DLe 55 is a very good selection..Quadra is good too.
