I always take some cash with me to a swap meet, even if I'm selling. If I don't get what I feel is fair for my items, they will make the trip back home, along with whatever deals I run across while I'm there. I sell my stuff to fund the purchases of other rc items, not to feed my family, so I don't have to sell it. If I don't sell it, I'll take it back home and enjoy it for a while longer.

I think the OP answered his own question. Most new planes being bought and sold are smaller electrics. The old glo and gas powered planes aren't being bought or flown by newcomers to the hobby. The only guys who do that are the ones who have been doing this for many years. And those guys already have tons of RC stuff in their own shops that they will never even get to use so why buy more at anything beyond a steal? The long time modelers show up to sell at the swap meet and all they have to deal with are other long-timers.

I saw those 2 G38s for sale at Nashville for $200 ea. Pretty tasty price. I've got one in a box at the house along with a Q35, 2 US41s and who knows what else in that size. I didn't "need" those motors but might have been interested at half the asking price. That's robbery to the seller. For what it's worth, I picked up the US41 and the Q35 in a box at Perry last year for $35 along with a bunch of other parts. Had to do a little work but both of them run like scalded dogs now.

I love a swap meet. See you all in Columbia if it doesn't snow and yes I'm going to Perry again!

I love a swap meet too, and I carry cash.   But I also carry stuff that I want to get rid of too.    Many times I have something that the vendor wants and we swap.   Sometimes I have something  another  swapper wants and we swap.     I  just enjoy the  haggling (negotiation)  of the swap.   It's always fun when both parties walk away with something they wanted and felt good about the price or the swap.

It's  unfortunate that some  vendors  seem to make it a business and their  profit margin is  foremost on their mind.     And it's  also a shame that some  customers  want something for nothing.

If a guy can actually make money at a swap meet I say more power to him. He's not going to make it by overpricing his stuff though, because too many buyers will just walk right on past him. If someone actually makes money with RC gear, he's going to make it when he buys or trades for things, getting great buys on items that the owner doesn't know what they are worth.

When I use the term   "vendor"   I mean it as the person that  rented a  table or booth.     Some "vendors"   are  professional vendors,   some vendors  are  just  guys like myself that are in the hobby for the enjoyment that have  collected stuff over the years that they no longer need or want.

That is what I mean as  some vendors are in it for the profit margin.    They usually mark their prices too high where as the  hobbyists marks his stuff just to get rid of it and they are usually into the idea of   "swapping",  that was the original idea behind  swap meets.

I am fine with the professional vendor, sometimes they have something I need,     but it is more fun dealing with the hobbyists and swapping parts or ideas.

Frank

...and that's a pretty uncalled for statement.

It's obvious that reply was made, because Frank has challenged some of your promotional statements made about HK. Responding by quoting Frank's posts out of the blue and calling them foolish is not a way to react to things.

Frank is also correct. Historically in this country, swap meets were intended to serve the function that the name implies. Swapping does not imply profit. We are all aware that there are some vendors who sell for profit at swap meets. We don't call people foolish for implying that it is somewhat contrary to the implication of the term "swap". Hope that's clear enough.

I like going to the swap meets. I've been going for 20 yrs. I get all kinds of bargains on aircraft, building materials, motors, etc. With me, it's a hobby and a job. My shop is stocked better than most hobby shops, when it comes to building supplies. Saves me a lot of trips to the hobby shop. John R.

Good thread. First off swap meets are for both sides of the fence but at the same time the seller needs to remember that if it has flow it's a used item. No different then going out & buying a 2yr old car but the dealer wants top dollar. With that said, CASH talks, The only way to know if you can walk away with that next flyer at a little less dollar is to ask. I am one of those Vultures, I look for the bargains and snag them up. I too have a hooby shop that probably has more in it than the average hobbyshop as I live 70 miles from the nearest one. Also the reason I have my own airstrip here at the house, Which anyone is welcome to stop by & fly.

Oh and as far as the Originator not being able to sell is probably because most new & veteran flyers are flying electrics. I my sell would much rather stay with the nitro's. Love the sound & smell & everything else that they offer. I think the newer generation is into electrics cause they can fly them around without anyonne hearing them & complaining, And their less maintence so they don't have to learn about the engines & how to keep them running. Just a thought but I see it around here. I'm one of the few nitro geeks left in the area, even the hobby stores are carrying less nitro planes & parts & lots more of the electric.
