Anybody know a good source for some lead weights? Im tired of running to my LHS for those little stickys every time i need to add weight. theres got to be something ealse im not thinking of. somthing i can drill and use screws on. I have used rolls of pennies and epoxy with pretty good success but i need a little more this time. any ideas ? Thanks, Joe

BB's   (usually at ammo dept) are a great source get then at walmart  , 5 pound plastic container  about 8 bucks  pore the amount you need into a plastic bag . you can also add epoxy to secure them in the bag.

I've used 1/4" thick steel plate cut out to fit the firewall. Then mount the engine. Usually on short nose round cowls like on Zero's and Stearman's. Of course it helps have a metal cutting band saw.

I use lead flashing for chimneys. Get it at hardware stores and Home Depot You can fold it quite easily and make blocks.

Lead shot in the 25lb bag. Make holding weights or epoxy pie where ever needed.

And if you need nose weight, on my last two models I bought flat round or triangular fishing weights at Academy sports. Then drilled and tapped the sides of my engine mounts and screwed the weights to the engine mounts. Puts the weight as far forward as possible, minimizing the amount needed and lets you remove or lighten the amount if needed as you get comfortable with the plane.

My buddy and I use a small cupcake metal cooking sheet. Fill the cupcake form with shot or whatever you like and hit it with the propane torch. Let it cool and turn the sheet over and you have a nice block that you can drill a hole through or glue on.....recommend the bolt on method. Again, use the mini cupcake sheet.

I'd say Wal-mart for lead sinkers, but those things are rather expensive..... but they can be pounded into whatever shape you need and then held in with silicone adhesive...

dash3riprock; go to your local "Scuba Dive Shop" in your area, they should have a good selection of various lead weights, size, shapes, weights etc., that can be drilled and attached to your aircraft to suit your needs.

Why not usable weight? If you need to add weight, purchase a larger battery. It does'nt make sense to add dead weight. A larger battery will solve your balance problem as well as adding more flight time.

I get mine at the local dive shop. You can get some that goes on a weight belt, and shot thats in a strong woven bag. On the bag I emty out whatever amount needed.

I go to my local tire store and ask for some used tire weights. They are usually reluctant but when I tell them what I want them for they will give me me a couple handfulls. Bring your own bag. They are using steel instead of lead now so there is less and less lead in the mix. They are dirty but the price is right.

Decoy strap weights work great. They are soft and flat and can be easily cut, drilled, or bent to shape.

Zinc plates used on boats. You can usually get used ones at a marina in the spring for free.

I would recommend Ram3500 (gary Prince) and his steel powder. Very easy to use and besides lead is toxic when melted. I took some old paper tubes from wing tubes, sealed the end with packing tape, mixed up 30min epoxy and poured it in. When its cured it can be cut on a band saw without clogging up the blade. Best thing is you can cut it to any size you need. And its heavy stuff when its mixed.

Edwins steele firewall is a clean idea,you dont need to epoxy a bunch of crap to the cowl just BUILD it into the plane.good idea ED.
