Hi All,
Is there a way to test pickup and ign coils appart from just replacing them? I have an engine that used to run through a full 500ml tank and now it runs through a 1/4 of the tank and then stops as if the ign has been switch off. i have changed the fuel tank and fuel lines to eleminate it, replaced the plug, but the engine just quits after about 5mins. Engine will not run untill it has cooled right down which points to something getting hot, it is not the carb as if I try to start the engine it just ends up flooding.

Cheers

Hi Ghost
I had a similar problem recently with my new K600s twin cyl engine would run fine then suddenly loose fire on one cyl turned out to be a duff plug, you could also inspect the filter in the underside of the carb make sure it clean or as martin said check the diafram is ok or replace.

Bob.

Stating what wngine you have would help. I'm kind of thinking that it's not ignition related but could be. In 5 minutes time, that would be enough to let it build up enough heat where parts expand. How does the compression feel when you try to restart it hot? A quick check of nuts and bolts might give you a clue as to if it's elsewhere.
Check your spark plug gap as it only has to be .016". Any more puts the secondary coil at risk of going bad. Usually a high-speed miss is a tell-tale sign there.

Has the motor got the plastic intake manifold?
They warp with heat, and act that way.
Take it off and place on a peice of glas to check.
I run aluminum manifolds.

I have changed the plug and carb with no change. Motor runs fine and then just stops.

Cheers

The engine is a K30S, Every thing is tight and the engine runs fine with no miss or stutter, I have several of these engines and this is the only one I am having problems with, compression is good, engine starts on first pull after priming and runs great right up untill it stops.

Cheers

I replace all the carb insulator blocks with rotated alloy intake blocks as I have heard that they warp.

If you've got other motors swap coils
I had a coil where the plug connector was only touching the side of the plug wire
and would quit.

I don't like removing coils when thaey are running right, also the others are in boats, not easy to get them off the motor, There must be a way to test the coils.

Cheers

You will need a multi meter.

Source coil ( eng. mounted );

Red wire to black wire = infinity to 300 ohms

Secondary coil ( to the spark plug ) MAKE SURE THIS COIL HAS A PERFECT GROUND TO THE ENG.

Plug wire to red wire = about 2000 ohms
Red wire to ground ( post of coil or eng. ground ) = 0 to .1 ohm
Plug wire to ground = about 2000 ohms.

If the secondary coil ground is iffy, heat could interupt the grounding. A lot of guys connect a proper ground strap just to be sure.

SlowMo,
Thanks for the info, at least I have an area to start. I am pretty shure that it is the pickup coil as I have tested the ign coil on an old QJ(Chinese Zenoah) engine and it works fine so it looks like heat is upsetting the pickup coil.

Cheers

Make sure the source coil is well grounded too.

Sometimes the red wire conectors between the coils can appear tight but not making a solid conection.

On the RCMK's, it's not the first time that the bullet connectors have been found out to be the problem. Swap out the connectors or just solder the wires together.
