  Hi all

Just trying to work out cost to charge up 5200 mah 30c lipos at 6amps would be ?

My electric supply company charge me 20 cent per kilowatt per hour.

I am using the Turnigy 400w multi charger which can charge 4 batteries at a time.

All info greatfully appriciated :-)

We need the voltage of the battery pack. It is obviously twice as much to charge a 6s pack than a 3s pack. [;)]

Well, you can find the watts you're using by multiplying voltage x amperage. If you pack was charged with 7.4v(not sure about this) at 6 amps, that would be 44.4 watts. Of course that's not including the power the charger needs to operate. Also in order to complete the estimate, we'd need to know roughly how long it takes to charge the pack.

Let's build on that 44 watts and assume it takes an hr. It looks , like a penny.

Yea, I never even knew this was an issue worth worrying about. No offense intended to the OP, and PLEASE don't take it as such, but RC is not cheap, if you are in a position to worry about what charging a battery will do to your power bill, maybe this isn't for you. I would, however, love to invite you over and see you cringe when my welder or air compressor dim the lights :p

I came on here to hear genuine replies to my question.

I would prefer if you have nothing to add to the post that you refrain from posting anything.

I would love you to see my bills for skydiving and riding a ZZR1400 every year i am sure you would also cringe ....no offence intended [8|]

Wow, dude, I seriously meant no offense and even took lengths to emphasize that. Your OP made it sound like you were concerned about the cost, not curious.

And personally, nobody cares what bike you ride or what you do in your free time, dude.

I totally agree!! Yeah  watch the meter spin at 10,000 rpm  when using the welder!!  Hey man look at it this way... the dude skydives...he has much bigger problems than being concerned about what it costs to charge a battery.

Ha! Funny stuff...muppet...I'm going to use that!
One way to figure it out would be to flip off all the breakers on your meter exept for one that nothing but your charger is plugged into. Record the reading before and after you charge your battery. This would give you precisly the amount used. With that number you could figure out the exact cost.  Let us know what you find out.

Fahrt, if you'd been following Henry's threads, you might have noticed that he is starting a small RC track and hire venture, so will be charging large numbers of packs constantly, up to 30 packs possibly 15-20 times a day, as you can imagine electricity consumption then becomes a concern.

ok ive been playing around.

Electricity is expensive here tho its about 18c/kw,h

The supply was 244.6v @ 50htz
Im using a 30a Power Supply to Power 2x Imax B6 chargers, both where on but only one was charging.
I charged a 2s 7.4v 5500mah 30c lipo @ 5amps max
Mind u the battery charged to 6351mah but took its time to ballance, 104min normally its alot faster
Using a Efergy power meter It dident measure of its kw,h scale (000.0) but it did peak at 65 watts and droped to 16 watts neer the end of the charge

So lets use the peak value.
charging at 5amps for one hour consumes 0.065 kilowatt hours (65 W / 1000 W/kW) × 1.73333h (104min) = 0.11266645 kW,h.
0.11266645 kW·h × $0.18/kW,h = $0.020279961,
or two cents.

Keep in mind this is the max values. no way would it ever use that much power to charge. still a hell of a lot cheaper than nitro's

Can you tell me how long it usually takes to charge up your 5500 mah 30c lipo as i have 5200 mah 30c lipos and was hoping to charge each one in under an hour at 5 amps...do you think this is possible?

no not at 5 amps.

The best u will get would be 1.2 hours but thats with a really good battery at 20% Efficiency Loss, 1.4h 30% & 1.5 for 40%

So it would be around 1.2-1.5 hours providing they are not higher than 5200mah

Henry, as you learn which individual packs have well balanced cells in terms of the way they DIScharge, in other words, are usually pretty well balanced when the lvc stops the truck (and therefore need balance charging less often), you will be able to do 'fast' charges at 5A, which will be done in about 50 minutes I would guess. The time is added doing balance charges as the charger pisses around with the cells to try to get them matched again toward the end of the cycle. What you could do, though there is a small risk attached, is balance charge only once every 5 (for example) charges. The non-balance charges will be fast.

6A will give you the hour you want even on a balance charge, and 40-45 mins on a fast charge. I can see why you are keen to reduce the amps, as 6amps to 5amps is an 18% decrease in overall power usage, however, with the charge taking longer, I really don't think you'll realise gains in the region of more than 5% by dropping an amp; stick with 6A.

Hey Foxy whats ur take on charging at 1c??? sometimes Ive charged at 1.5c on a ballance charge. and wonder if it is really that bad?

I think if the battery is rated for it, go for it, IF you have a good reason. When I'm charging on a Friday evening in anticipation of a Saturday bash, I balance charge at 1c. When my first pack(s) are depleted at the bash spot, they go straight on the charger at 2C non-balance. I then balance and store charge them when I get home.

The Turnigy 4x6 4 way charger i got seems to only charge at a maximum of 5amps . I have not connected a lipo upto it yet as i am waiting on traxxas battery connectors but when i connect up the charger and go through the settings it says lipo charge 5amps...now i can go down the ampage to 4.9 4.8 etc etc but not up past 5amps to say 5.1 5.2 or 6amps etc.
 
Anyone else using one of these?

Right. Understood.

How about computer systems? Lighting? Is it indoor and possibly in need of heat in the cold months?

I'd estimate the cost off the top of my head as being a heck of a lot less than the other costs in his overhead, poor guy has  alot of checking to do! Take the other guys advice and buy yourself a cost meter, set it up and check it all out. With all that charging you might be stretched pretty thin, it even takes power to flush the toilet, and that's a lot of people!
