Does anyone have a GP Giant Big Stik ARF (80" wiingspan)? If so, can you please tell me how wide the ailerons are(from LE to TE)? The ailerons are wider at the fuselage end than the wingtip end so please measure both . I am building a slightly smaller stick and want a reference on how big the ailerons can be. Also, I would like to know what there construction is, lite-ply or balsa?

Aileron dimensions anyone please! Either the flaps or the ailerons.

Just the ailerons or both the ailerons and flaps?

I have my flaps acting as inboard ailerons for more authority.

In one switch postion they work exactly as the ailerons.

In another they work as flaps for tight loops using elevator to flap mixing.

In another switch position I use them for crow, with mixes... useful for bringing the plane to an immediate halt in both the air and on the ground.

Re: Construction

It is predominately light ply.

Balsa is put over the ply stringers and formers on the fuselage.

The elevator and rudder is mostly balsa, because thicker lengths are used.

The wings has some balsa, but a lot of ply for support structures.

Heavy wood is used around the gear area, firewall and wing mounts.

Thanks Opjose. I was interested in the width of the flap closest to the fuselage and the width of the aileron at the wing tip. Also, how are the aileron and flap hinged> Meaning, how is the hinge inserted into the flap/aileron if it is lite-ply? There must be some thickness for the hinge to be slotted and inserted in. Does the flap/aileron LE have a strip of balsa attached to the lite ply to give room for the hinges to be inserted?

Thanks!

I'm not in front of the plane but I'll refer to it later.

If I recall correctly the TE of the wing is quite thick. Well over 1/4" or so, so there is plenty of room for the hinge slot. Likewise for the LE of the control surface. It is not a single sheet of ply, but rather a laminate.

My Giant GP used CA hinges if I recall correctly. I believe I merely substituted the GP provided ones for Dubro CA hinges, which do not have a plastic substrate.

The material comes off the plastic substrate as the CA ages and I've had that happen before, so I tend to switch to non-plastic or non-laminate CA hinges.

I've had CA hinges fail before and have stopped using them. I didn't know there was a difference between CA hinges though. The ones that failed on me had the plastic strip which became brittle and broke.

I am building a 1.20 size ugly stik from enlarged plans and need to know the size of the Giant Big Stik ailerons so I can make mine similar. I built a 60 size stik a couple years ago from the original sized plans but the ailerons were not wide enough to give good control at low speeds.

As you can see the LE of the ailerons and flaps are WELL over 3/8" thick.

The inner widest part of the flap ( or in my case inner aileron ) is 3 1/2"

The junction between the flap and aileron ( inner part of the aileron ) is 2 1/2" wide.

The aileron at the tip of the wing is 2" wide.

The TE of the wing and the LE of the ailerons/flaps is constant throughout.

Finally the aileron does NOT extend to the tip of the wing.

With both the flaps and ailerons active in unison, the plane is very responsive in rolls and I have no problem hovering it with little to no correcting inputs.

Yup.

I've had the fibers delaminate from the plastic after the CA got old. The control surface pulled cleanly off in flight, leaving just the CLEAR and somewhat pristine looking plastic substrate behind.

I've also had them become brittle when the fibers delaminated.

I've never have had problems with the fiber only CA hinges that Dubro sells... there is NO plastic in them, just a very tough material that doesn't seem to age nor get brittle in use.

I've over 200 flights on my Giant Big Stik, running a Syssa 30cc engine.

Thanks for all of your help. That is a nice looking stik.

Below are pictures of my original size (60) stick I built a couple years ago. The ailerons are too small and the plane is heavy (since I built it ). On my next build, I will build lighter and with bigger ailerons. Not sure if I will split the ailerons to have flaps, but am thinking about it. I ordered $120 worth of wood from Balsa USA on Saturday, can't wait to get started. I ordered their largest size aileron stock which is 2-1/2" wide. From your measurements I know now that this is not as wide as the Giant Stik. So, I will cut my own from lite-ply using the dimensions you gave me.

Very nice looking "Green" Stik.

On my .60 sized Big Stik ( R.I.P. ) the ailerons and elevators were bigger.

If you are still flying the green one, you could revisit those surfaces. I'll bet it will be an excellent "windy day" flyer with more control authority.

On the Giant Stik flaps.

Yeah it really doesn't need flaps per-se.

The only thing I use them for is CROW, and then to slow the plane down once it is down, but if I didn't have this, I wouldn't miss it.

I've thought about making the ailerons bigger on the green stik. Unfortunately, I had to re-hinge the ailerons because the CA hinges failed (as I had mentioned). When I repaired the hinges, I cut new slots and installed nylon hinges. Since there is no more room for new hinges, I would probably have to cut the scallops off the existing ailerons (1/4" balsa, no problem) and splice on a bigger piece of 1/4" balsa. Perhaps on a rainy day I will do this !
