Hello all,

Well I have taken the plunge after no sucess at all with a FE system on my VS1 I have taken the plunge into the world of nitro outboards. I bought a new Thunder tiger Pro as that was most of the budget gone.

My question is about starters, do I need a 12 volt hand held starter or can I buy from somewhere an adaption for a cordless drill so I dont need to cary a car battery with me, and I already have the cordless drill.

Cheers

guys are using a 18 volt battery pack from your hand drill. Adding that to the starter Some add a older 4 wheeler starter. Or make your own ,and go wireless.

I bought a replacement cone for a starter ( I believe a dubro) and use a drill on most of my nitro boats.  I don't believe it has the torque of a good aircraft starter but it will  fire up a 3.5 outboard no trouble.

Some new engines can be hard to turn over with the starter because of a tight piston/liner fit. If this is the case with your Thunder Tiger, you can heat the head with a heat gun. This expands the sleeve and makes it easier to start the engine. I had to do this with my O.S. when I replaced the piston/sleeve with new ones.

Once the engine is broken in, the starter needs very little amps to get the engine going.

A new or hard-to-start engine can be cranked over easier if you loosen the glow plug.
