Humbling to see this. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1910-HORNSBY-LIVE-STEAM-TRACTOR-/300811316272?pt=Model_Kit_US&hash=item4609c06c30

Don't make snide remarks about the asking price it is obviously alot, that's up to the seller and possible buyer; I only reference this
because if the uniqueness. The listing said it took the original builder 17 years to construct.

That really is amazing!!!!! The track alone looks like it would be a bad dream to build. Building scale parts is difficult enough to get the dimensions right, but getting them to operate like functioning machinery is something I only dream about.

The longer I look at the photos of that jewel, the more reasonable the price becomes.

Rex

For a second I thought I was on the model steam forum

I saw that while looking for engines the other day, its quite spectacular, although I question who will go on ebay with 36k in pocket change for one.

Forgive me for asking, should the model be reflective of the period pics? I mean there is no return roller in the period pic.

the track seems to be much more flexible than the period one, so I assume he added it to keep it more authentic than if it was drooping all over?

That's an interesting observation........ I just did a Google search and all of the photos of operating models built by a number of enthusiasts of that tractor show the same return roller installed on their model also. I wonder what is supporting the track on the real thing? I can't see anything that would account for the track not sagging, and being able to maintain the arch that is evident. That looks strange to me.

I should have included these photos (there are many more out there)..........like everything, I guess there are different variations/improvements. I now know more about these things that I did when I woke up this morning.......Thanks for getting me interested!

I wonder if those tracks on the full scale, are designed sort of like a metal watch band? Meaning they only curve one way, if you hold that style watch upside down the band still stays in place.

I feel Wade is right as the stiffness of the track does not allow sagging. The mechanical nature of the links seem to allow only outward flexing.

Interesting this aspect was not modeled, Oh I'm becoming a rivet counter now aren't I?

Right on the money guys

"Top of track supports itself by design. Links bottom out on each other when the minimum curve is reached. This 1 inch gap above the support roller shows in the 1927 photo taken in New Westminster on the machine's return from the Yukon."

From: http://www.hornsbycrawler.org/index.php/Main/Gallery2

Apparently the pics in the Ebay add are of the factory original. Roller added later model/variant.

The description ( a bit of embellishment perhaps?) said the tracks alone to the builder 2 years to make. I would hope in that
time he researched the originals however even if that is true perhaps the tracks we see are the result of practical compromise
as the model was designed to be functional?
