I'm in the process of building a Jerry Bates F4F. I was thinking of putting a RCS or Moki 150 in it.

The scale prop is around 24 inches. These engines take a 26x14 I can get a 24x14 but will this combo work on the engine and 2nd question. Is this tooooo much for this size of bird ??? 50# of thrust on a 30+ lb airframe.

I've never had these engines so would like to get some input.

Thank you

I have looked at building a bates wildcat a couple of times. I have a 250 radial and it seems to me to really put out about as much power as a good 100 twin with 10x the maintenance and a lot more risk of it quitting. If i spent the time to build one i would put a good reliable 80 twin in it. The extra 5 lbs or so of motor is a lot to carry on a 91 in wing plane. Good luck which ever way you go.

I believe the limiting factor is the cowl diameter? My friend has a Saito 450 that flies his. His plane weights 36lbs. At 30lbs the 450 would work great. Saito is going to release the 450 glow as an FG84 gas in the near future.

I believe the diameter of the Moki 150 is 10.2 inches. I don't know the exact diameter of the Saito 450. If I knew it would be helpful.

The GT 80 twin flies the plane fine but I'm told its pretty fast with that engine. The problem being that that engine needs to rev for power so scale flight, slower, is more difficult.

I've purchased a Glass Fuse for the Bates WildCat. I'm still looking at engines myself. Maybe next winters project.

I'm happy I was able to purchase it. It's a glass fuse by Leo Spychalla. A friend was selling it so I purchased it. I won't pick it up till I see him in the spring. My other friend who is currently flying his Bates also has a glass fuse by Leo. He likes it.

I didn't see the diameter specs for the 450! lol.. but thans Ross..

Oops actually the diameter is 250mm. It is 237mm wide. You would think they would choose D as diameter, but noooo they have to use H.

So its 10inches in Diameter. ok. The Moki is a bit wider. Maybe just enough wider so as to not fit the cowl.

The Saito 450r is a tight fit. If the Moki is any larger then it is a no go. Personally I believe the Moki to be far to much engine. The G-62 or G-80 or Laser 360 or Saito 450r have all powered the Bates Wildcat. I wish mine was a bit lighter.

Theres a youtube video of the FG84 being tested. I would think its another progression in the gas line up for Saito.

GT-80 has pleanty of power. My airplane is 37lbs with fuel.

I don't think the Moki 150 will fit. I had to build an inverted motor box to get the GT-80 to fit.
This design flies great!!

Saito is releasing a larger 3 cylinder engine at 84cc. The Saito 450r is 75cc. A bit different and I suspect larger. The 450 barely fits inside as is.

Will have to wait for the engine specs to be released to see if it fits.

Would be nice to get this plane around the 30-32lbs. Not sure that's possible but maybe.

Here is a link to a article of one with the Moki 150. I have seen it fly and it does not seem to be over powered, in fact flies it very well. There is also a link to a Youtube video of it.

BobH...I agree, it would be awsome. Also I wish the build would get down to the 30lb range but the fiber glass fuse is STOUT to say the least. Beutiful glass work by Leo.

Sorry I wish I had more info on it. It has competed the last two years at Top Gun and hopefully 2013 US Scale Masters. Frank did a fantastic job building it I have seen it now a few times makes me want to build one.

You can try contacting Frank Harris through the Pomona Valley Model Airplane Club in Chino, CA. www.PVMAC.com Kyle Goodwine was the pilot and his dad is the president of the club.

It is great to hear that the Moki 150 fits. That and the 250 are the best sounding radials I have heard.

Did you ever try a 24" prop on your 150? I would be curious to know how it worked or if it worked.
