Putting a regulator for my ignition. Does it go after the Optical kill? Thoughts about switching the voltage to 5.4v at 3a or leave it 5.9v at 5a?

If you are trying to get but the kill and regulator functions I would recommend getting an ibec. I use the Aerotech.

i put the regulator on the out put of the switch

You don't really need a regulator, just a diode. But in any case, the last thing before the ignition.

No need for an IBEC or anything else fancy.

I'm not electric savvy. Next time I'll do a diode, alot cheaper. What should I ask for at Radio Shack?

Why the need for a regulator? I run a 2100Mah / 4.8V Ni-Mh ignition battery on my DLE20 and generally fly 4 to 6 flights of an average of 10 minutes each and I add approx 800 -1000mah after a day of flying.
I also use about 150Mah per flight on my Syssa SAP180 on my pattern ship. I also use a 2100Mah / 4.8v pack in that.

Im not debating the use of NIMH. I use Eneloope now on the ignition. The thing is I use Life on my reciever and it holds a charge a long time. I can leave it sit for weeks and not have to recharge. I always have to recharge the Eneloopes. The Eneloope are great batteries but prefer LiFe.

It really doesn't matter if it goes before or after the opto kill.  I would run it at the lower voltage, easier on the ignition.

I agree, I have A123's on all of my gassers with the single diode drop on the ignition.

Thanks guys! 'Cuda, I saw that site last night in my search for answers. I will order from there next time now that I know what I'm looking at. I like to keep it simple.
So guess my questions have been answered! Thanks a bunch!

Or you can buy 100 diodes on ebay for less than 1.50 and make your own leads.

I would say after as some kill swiches have a min voltage requirment,

No, a 4.8 volt battery connects directly to the ignition box.
Most ignition systems should not get more then 6 Volts. Look at the label.
There are different diodes, most take .5 to .7 volts off.

A diode can be put before the switch, not a regulator as it will always draw some current when connected to a battery.
So typically your battery connects to the switch, then diode/regulator and then the ignition system.

For the radio circuit - a diode will likely not deliver enough current, mostly they can safely deliver no more 1 amp.
With a higher rate, they will heat up, eventually melt and shorten out (then they put out the full voltage) or disconnect (you loose power).
Most ignition systems take no more then .5 amps, Zenoah is at 2 amps, so you should be sure about this.

For powering a radio system - get a regulator. HK has them for less then $10, they work great.
And for high amp applications, a capacitor after the regulator is also a good idea to make sure you don't overload the electronics.
