Not as fun as "Guess the Car Game" (I'm not tha much of a nerd, err...I mean FAN, just yet  ...;-)

In all seriousness, today after I had my savage upside down (no shell), when tilting it back I noticed this on my work bench. I did a cursory look, but could not anything.  I'm confident it's from the truck, though - as I don't typically leave screws around. It could have fallen out of one of my parts containers, but I very much doubt that also (as I keep screws separate and had my washers container out)..

It's a 2mx12mm screw (hint: there are not many of those on the savage).

Anyone care to guess? The winner is crowned "King of Savages"! ;-)

I thought the smallest screw on a savage was 3mm thick,

Don't think that's out of your truck.

But if its 3mm it's probably from your engine mount.

Looks like the screw that holds the engine to the engine mount. Possibly a head bolt......

I tend to agree
only screws that have that type of head I can think of on a savage are the screws that hold the engine the the mount. All the others have a button top head that I can think of, and more of a cutting type thread as they often get screwed into plastic (not counting the 8-10 machine screws that have the button top head)

Unless it comes from the engine heatsink, its from the engine mount.

Trick question, no M2x12mm screws are included with a stock Savage. Based on the thread pitch, that is an M2.6-0.45 x 12mm cap screw from the roto start backplate.

Additionally, I noticed one of the screws (that goes into the engines back plate) was also loose.

See pic below for reason why.

This seems to be a defective part (I fail to see how it could have broken off). Any suggestions for it - other than getting a new one?

Thanks

You can try to put some JB Weld there, then tap the hole once it cures. Just an idea.

Thanks. I'm taking it out today for a good bashing session and will monitor it.  I'm also sending HPI a picture of it and requesting a new "cover plate" for the engine. I found one on ebay for $13.00, but will be curious as to how HPI responds.

Give them a call as well. I think HPI offers a 1 year warranty on parts...don't quote me on that though. Just say that you haven't had it that long, take care of your items, etc etc. They will most likely send you a new one free of charge.

Their customer service was pretty good from what I remember.

My son and I took it out and ran it HARD through about three tanks (see shamless video plug here), and the roto-start back plate held up pretty well. I did use a sh*t load of blue-thread lock on it, so that seemed to help. The downside is I have to pull the engine just to check the screws.
