Where do you guys get all these carbon fiber radio trays that I keep seeing so often on these forums? Do you typically cut them yourselves, or is there a place that sells ready-cut / custom-cut trays for different models?

Also, wouldn't a carbon fiber tray have a negative impact on radio reception, depending on where the antennas are placed?

I think most of those that you are seeing are actually wood trays covered with the carbon fibre looking monokote. Because real carbon does cause the 2.4Ghz radios to have issues.

Status: offline 		Most are plastic trays that look like carbon cloth. Dreamworksrc sells the material. It looks gray on the webstie but it is a black carbon pattern.

Status: offline 		there is monokote that looks like carbon? Awesome! I have the plastic sheets from dream works. Still need to put plywood underneath, don't think they're strong enough on there own. The monokote idea is sweet.

Status: offline 		Very Neat Install Mike Cant beat plastic lookalike sheets, just score down the back with a scalpel and twist two or three times and they break leaving a clean edge, dont even need sanding if the cut is straight......Im always sanding mine to a nice finish

Status: offline 		I cut mine out of G-10 to custom fit on my CNC machine. Have been thinking about offering it as a service if some people wanted a custom tray

Status: offline 		Getting it cut out on CNC would be cool. My problem is I sit there and kind of plan arrangement as I go. Can you cut the plastic sheets or do they just melt? Your G-10 is much lighter than the way I'm doing it.

Status: offline 		Yeah, I know what you mean Mike. The other problem is getting all the measurements for the parts and things that will go into the tray. I think ultimately its doable one way or another. I can cut the plastic no problem most likely with a single flute bit. They also make special plastic cutting bits.

Status: online 		Als hobbies sell plastic look alike in 34 x 66 sheets if I remember correctly : http://alshobbies.com/shop/lookupstock.php?pc=35093 I usually gorilla glue it to a 3mm piece of ply to give it a bit of strength if its going to hold any weight.

Status: offline 		I believe the Monokote being discussed is actually Oracover and/or Ultracote. Works great, looks great, just build a wood tray and cover it up.

Don't use a carbon fiber tray, unles you don't mind crashing and buying a new plane.

Don't use a carbon fiber tray, unles you don't mind crashing and buying a new plane.




I disagree with that, my Firebird (and all firebirds) have carbon fiber trays and none that I'm aware of have been lost to radio issues. Do a clean install and locate receivers and antenna's in spots that make sense and there is no issue.

Status: offline 		Top Flite makes Carbon Fiber and Kevlar Monokote and Hanger 9 makes Carbon Fiber Ultracote. I prefer the Ultracote myself. Easier to work...

Status: offline 		Been using carbon fibre trays for years and never had an issue. I make my own I have a sheet of glass with 3mm sides and lay it up you can't tell the difference from the stuff you pay through the nose for.Make all my own horns as well.

Status: offline 		The real carbon mounts act like a shadow just like metal. That's why Spektrum makes carbon specific Rx units. BUT... on an Rx like the 1221... you have 3 satellites. So... as long as they are mounted somewhere else... it's not a big deal.


I don't do the cleanest installs... but I also use wood, and covering.

G-10 builds up a surface charge... watch out... but if you spray a light coat of hair spray or clear on it, its ok..

We had issues in an EMI chamber with G10 discharges on a sensitive piece of calibrating electronics awhile back at work

Status: offline 		I am painting my boards so that wont be a problem. But the G10 I use from mcmaster states it has good electrical insulating properties so I dont see how it would conduct enough electricity to cause issues with the equipment.
