my son has been flying RC airplanes for about 1 year and is getting somewhat competent.  He has been spending a lot of time on our simulator flying Heli's and I would like to get him one for christmas.  I am an RC airplane guy so do not have any knowledge.  What is a good choice that is relatively indestructible, has replacement parts available, and uses a standard 2.4 GHz radio
thanks
Irvin

Buy him a Blade co-ax helicopter. Simple and fun to fly. Repairable. Priced from $50 to $180. My favorite one is the mCX2 for around $120. Never get tired of flying it in the living room. The best dirt cheap heli is the Syma S107G for about $20. You won't believe the value for the price. I own about 20 co-ax plus some FP and CP helis. My biggest one is a T-Rex 500 and the smallest is the MSR.

It really depends on how skilled your 7 year old is.  You say he is already a pretty competent plane flyer.  Does that mean that he can take off...fly the circuit and land without killing the plane?  If so, a co-ax will probably be too much of a "toy" for him to really enjoy.

I have a son who just turned 7 last week.  He cant fly anything...even a co-ax.  So, for him...a co-ax heli would be perfect as he would actually learn something with it.  If he was already flying a plane...I would not get anything less than a FP (such as the mSR already suggested) and really I would probably start him off on the SIM and a mCPX or nano CPX since both are CP helis and once he learns to fly either one of those...there wont be a heli out there that he couldnt fly...all the way up to a 700 size one.

So...only you know the skill level he is at right now.  And like I said...if hes a competent plane flyer...Id go with a micro CP heli.  The Blade ones arent cheap...but sure are durable and replacement parts can be found at almost any hobby store worth their salt.

just my opinion.  your success/failure will vary based on your assessment of your young guys skill set at this point in time.

PS...if you go the micro CP route such as mcpx or nano cpx...dont start him out flying it in the house.  These helis are quick as a hummingbird on crack...and he will break it or things in your home with it until he gets comfy with flying it.  Both of these micros do very good outside.  I fly my mcpx in winds up to 15 MPH all the time...even in some 20+ MPH gusts I can still control it in the circuit.  Its just its not as easy to maintain flips and rolls and loops in high wind as the tail will blow out even easier than it normally does with no wind.

goodluck to you both.

I agree with ATV! If he can fly a airplane, he will be bored with a co-ax heli! I would recommend a Nano cpx or a Mcpx! I started helis with a Mcpx and it taught me everything! It can take a beating and it really got my confidence up to fly larger helis!  The nano cpx is suppost to be really great to if you want something REALLY small.   -Sean

i thank everyone for their suggestions  I will probably be as excited as him on xmas morning trying to fly the thing around the tree.  Sean, I see  you are posting from France.  I fly a full scale Stampe SV4 with which you may be familiar.  Not a ton of folks in the US are  familiar with the old French military trainer.

I am not familiar with the aircraft. I actually just moved here 4 months ago on a 3 year assignment with my family. From what I see that is a very nice looking plane! -Sean

P.S Good luck with the heli! Just remember it takes a lot or patience and you will be just fine!
