Status: offline 		I think that any mods to this muffler are asking for trouble. Mine is made of the thinest softest metal. It might even be aluminum. I put a pice of copper tube on it during a test run. Just to see the sound change, and after the run the muffler was all scratched and dented. The copper pipe was only on for about 3 seconds and the muffler is damaged. It is very thin and soft. Be careful of the things you hang on the muffler. I am still working on it. Oh, and the muffler only attaches ONE way to the motor. There is no way to differ the angle of the exhaust. So you are stuck with where it points.

Status: offline 		Well, it fits. Now I just have to figure out how to get the muffler squared away. I would HATE to just stick the pipe out the front top of the cowl. That would look really out of place. Oh well, at least its a nice fit in the V 11.

I just asked http://www.justengines.co.uk/ in the UK if they where going to make an exhaust system or something for the GF-38, and got the answer below.
I usualy buy my engine exhaust and spare parts there, so this is good news

Are you going to develop an exhaust system/muffler for the NGH 38cc 4 stroke engine ?
Stock out of the box it only comes with a manifold, and is unfortunatly too load as it is.

Status: offline 		I'll be watching this thread very carefully about the muffler issue, because I think this engine might be too loud for our field. In the mean time, I'll just put a silicone extension/diverter on the stock pipe and see how it goes.

Status: offline 		I have been told, that a silicone tube/sleeve/extension will not hold up to the heat of the gas engine. That is why I did not go that route. but if it does hold up without melting, that would solve a few problems.

Status: offline 		That is pretty cool. I have found a use for those small size body spray bottles they sell over here. A year or so ago they used to sell small 8 ounce aluminum souvenir Coca Cola bottles that would work great for this too.

Status: offline 		The 8oz. coke aluminum "can-bottles" are still being sold. I had to call the coke company to find that only one Walgreens store in Tacoma kept them in stock. They sell them on Amazon.com but at a much higher price.

Check the Glow Forum for threads on how to make tuned pipes from these and mousse hair spray cans. It's a lot of fun to say the least.

Yes, you either drill a hole in the can or JB Weld in an aluminum tube for the stinger just like a tuned pipe. Lots of science and experimentation to it for tuning pipes on 2 strokes. Just using them as a muffler of sorts on a 4 stroke should be a lot easier.

Status: offline 		Usually what the guys do is use JB Welds Epoxy and glue in a tube to match the exhaust pipe size on the engine. Then they poke a hole in the rear or bottom and glue in a tube for the exhaust outlet.  If one is careful they could use aluminum solder and solder the tubes in place too. But the aluminum is thin thus you have to do it carefully. Some really good welder folks can weld it as well.
There are instructions on the internet for making Mousse Can mufflers that are popular with the Fun Fly and 3D plane folks too. It is basically the same technique, except you aren't needing to tune it for performance.

Status: offline 		3D master Dave McDonald gave up welding on the coke cans because it caused paint to flake off on the inside that would bounce around inside the can and sporadically plug up the stinger. There's a huge thread about the coke / bud can mufflers on the pro bro site.

As an experiment, my Saito FA150 W/C&H CDI burning E-85 made a bit more power. (18X8 @ 7500) Much ligter & probably W/a lot less vibration too.

Status: offline 		Perhaps he was trying to move the van down the road without using the vans motor. Srtelmaster, how much vibration does the NGH have compared to a Saito 150? And as to the weight of the NGH being more than a 150, that's one of the reasons I bought it. I have a Saito 2.20 in the front of my other DVII and I needed to add 2.5 pounds of weight in the nose. I need the NGH 38s weight. So its not always a bad thing to be a little heavy. I have had other gas motors and the shake on this one is about the same. I guess its all about what you are asking a motor to do. I will fly this one in a 1/4 scale WWI bird. So I do not need to go super fast or have the enging rev to 10000 rpm to make me happy. And the plane should be around 20 lbs, so the amount of pull from this motor should fly it at a nice scale speed with room to spare. And after I get a few tanks of gas run, I will let you know if I am still happy. But so far, its been a nice motor.

Status: offline 		Yep, The Saito 2.20 is pretty light, so thats what I needed. And 2.5 pounds is not that big of a deal on this bird. Others have used more. The 1/4 scale DVII has a ton of lift, and at 20 pounds dry weight it files great. Other DVII's have flown at 25 pounds and they flew great also. Its a long way from the tail to the CG on the DVII. Thats why I bought a bigger motor and did not mind the weight.

Status: offline 		I flew at Marymoor back in the mid-80's. At that time, it wasn't unusual to see an airplane, out of control, doing 100 mph through the pit area, inverted. That's how the nickname "Scarymoor" started. I haven't flown there in 25 years, but I've heard that it's gotten much better.
