Are you having issues with the stock boxes? I run them with speed 400s and they're the smoothest tu I have

Yes , with stock boxes. What type (Tamiya Tiger , Sherman, Pershing? ...? )  is best and what modifications are needed ?

My gosh please do, I still haven't gotten one of them working and just using tam ones would save so much work

I use Tamiya tiger tus, but removed the output shaft and installed the on off the Hooben tus (the thin one you bolt the final drive shafts onto). Hope that makes sense. Thankfully Hooben copied the final drive gear (the shiney one on Tamiya boxes) so there's no modification needed. I'm at my girlfriends currently but ill get those pics up later today.

The only change you'll have to make is relocating the holes to bolt the tus onto the chassis.

Tamiya Type 3 TU gears are a drop in swap for the Hooben, if memory serves, including but not limited to the final drive shaft.

One of my customers had his output shaft break at the E clip notch near the final gear.... I wish they used sleaves like so many others do.

Let me rephrase what I posted earlier. Tamiya PERSHING gears are a drop in for the Hooben T 55 transmissions.

Oooooh now I understand why the pershing has those extra outdrives on it! Looks like theres one less gear within the TU its self. If you put those pershing TUs in you would get a really nice top speed! Just checked standard tamiya Panther tus will fit!

Not a problem with the photos. I was experimenting with the T 55 TU's not long after the first kit was delivered and found that interesting tidbit on the gear swap. The reason they work in the Hooben TU is because of the extra gear in the Hooben system to get the proper speed for the tank. Don't know how fast Pershing gears in a stock Tam tank, for instance the Tigers, would be, but it should be pretty fast.

Tamiya stopped making the 'overhaul' kits for the Type 3, but I think it is now back. I don't carry them, but check with Tamiya. If available, the overhaul kits should be on their sight.

sevoblast  , thanks a lot  for help - yest You are right I have found them in Tamiya.

By the way are Tamiya Sherman gearboxes so fast as the Tiger/King Tiger  ones?

Gearing, therefore speed, is the same for all the Type 3 transmissions from Tamiya, for instance Tiger 1, KT, Panther, Sherman, and KV all use the same transmission. The differences between those 5 at least is just the length of the final drive shaft.

I see  - thanks for explanations
I've just examined  my Tamiya Pershing, and  its standard gear is faster (so probably  additional reduction of speed made by external final case gear in Pershing) - so it can be the problem in T55 with too fast gearbox?

And what about "M02 Powerful black long can motor" offered by ETO  - is it significantly slower  than standard type 340 motor?
what is the rpm for 340 and for black motor? or mayby reduction of speed using ZUH19 gear down system is possible? but there is no too much free space  in T55 .

So wait, is the pershing gear set called an overhaul kit, of a type 3 gearbox or something? I am trying to find it on the tamiya site.

If you need M26 gearboxes, they can be had from eBay fairly inexpensive at Tamiya 1/16 M26 Pershing Gearbox as I bought a few for my T34's.

Sounds like a decent project you have going as I need something too for my HL KV.

Thanks - excately I ve bought one some hours ago under this ebay link, but now  Im thinking about  too big speed of T55 with such gearboxes.

Im  also thinking about my second tank,  KV-85 upgrade  (Tamiya KV-1 electronics and KV-1 HL lower hull, HL metal sprockets) - looking for not too fast  good quality gearboxes. Previously I was using 5:1 metal gearboxes from rctank.de - they were ideal as for tank speed , but are very noisy and dont working smooth.  Now on rctank.de I have found new 4:1 metal  gearboxes but have no opinion about its quality
http://www.rctank.de/product_info.php?cPath=23_56&products_id=1644

Maybe  Tamiya gearboxes ? - but what type to choose (what shafts?)  and they are probably too fast.

Martellus, the Tamiya Pershing uses a unique gear system in the transmission frame. This is because in the Pershing there is an external gear reduction right behind the drive sprocket, as in the prototype, therefore the tank itself has proper speed.

The transmission frame for the Pershing is the same Type 3 frame, as in identical, as used in the aforementioned tanks. Only difference is the gears themselves and the location of the final drive shaft. If you've ever wondered why there is an extra set of final drive shaft holes in for instance your King Tiger transmission frame, it's because the Pershing output shaft goes in the higher pair of holes rather than the lower as in all the other tanks using the Type 3.

Piotr, the black motors I have on my sight are just a little slower than the stock electric motors. However, they have very much more torque.

I'm sure some others will chime in with some inexpensive ways to slow down your tank...
... such as programing your radio with some throttle limits, in-line resistors and the installation of a flux on your motors too.

I just drive them slow and never really explore the "full throttle" on my radio.

Robert, Thank You  very much for help.
Ok I have to make some tests with my T55 and Tamiya Pershing gerarboxes . I'll see if any reductions in speed are needed ....
