Status: offline 		Looking forward to see how you and others mounted/secured the dummy engine.
Did you make a separate bracket supported to the firewall or is it attached
to the cowling.
I don't what anyone to take there plane apart just to take pictures. But maybe your at that point
in building, maintenance, or repair, you may be able to share a photo.

I always attach my dummy engines to the firewall using either steel tube or steel strap stock I make.

Status: offline 		I hope to get some projects squared away and then pull my 1/6 scale YMF from storage.
It is a pica that my Dad had bought already buildt and some how other planes tool
the spotlight. If I remember right, this plane has the wood egine rails like Deans T-28.

Dean is your dummy engine a Williams Brothers? I can't tell how you have it secured.

TK do you epoxy a tab on the dummy engine so you can bolt the tube or strap to it?
Or do you drill/tap or wood screw into the dummy engine directly?

Yes it is a Williams Bros. The engine is heald against the end of the engine beams by 2 screws you can see then in the image above.

Status: offline 		Here's a Jacobs 7 cylinder that I built using a set of cylinders from a Top Flite dummy engine kit and the crankcase is a hair spray can. The ignition manifold was built just like the one above. Spark plugs are pieces of brass tubing. I did this one several years ago. Several of the Waco Brothers have duplicated it.

Status: offline 		While I was at it I built a scale bucket seat out of aluminum tubing, card stock and aluminum sheet. Came out pretty close too. It is painted with DupliColor Chrome paint. Here is another shot of the Jake too.

I finished up mounting the radial tonight, I drilled and tapped the motor mount with 4/40s, very solid. this is the second radial I have mounted this way seams to work pretty good. Now onto mounting cowl and continue finishing the SRE, as I said before I will be posting semi-build thread of what changes I did/doing, nothing real deep but just a few details to make it look a little better than the basic Sig WACO SRE ARF. I will post here with a link when I do.

please feel free to post any dummy engines you have built or seen at a scale meet, this could turn into a very handy thread for the scale builder.

On my last project I actually made an attempt to make a 3 dimensional dummy engine. I got some left over, end of the run cast resin cylinders that had a lot of flaws becuse the mold was worn out from Barry Vogel........since they were flawed and I knew I couldn't make them look any worse I got over my intimidation complex and gave it a shot.

All I did was clean up the casting as best I could, then mounted them to a piece of steel, painted it black first, then sprayed silver at an angle, let it dry and then bolted them to the case of my G-62. I had flown for more than a year without any dummy engine at all. So this feeble attmpt at a dummy engine made a marked improvement in the scale outline.

The point here is that a poorly made dummy engine is better than none at all. Give it a shot - you have to start somewhere!

Status: offline 		Actually, Art, those castings look pretty clean in the photo! The resin cylinders I made for my Benz had flaws all over them, since that was the first time I had ever done a two-part mold and the first time I had used resin. But once they were painted a scale black (since they aren't really "cylinders" but rather "water jackets") and hidden behind a mound of rockers rods, tappets, springs, fuel pipes, exhaust pipes, spar plugs, water hoses, electrical wires, etc., the casting flaws just disappear.

And I agree, a "chin dummy" is better than no dummy at all. And no dummy is almost as bad as no pilot. Almost.

I added a few bit of styrene to lengthen the cylinders, create the rocker arms, and make a new "two-step" crankcase using the kit's rear face on the front. It didn't take much to make it look like an Oberursel.

The materials are cast resin cylinders, mild steel, and lite ply. The cylinders were cast from a worn out mold and I cleaned them up as best I could. I then cut the metal to fit the bottom two bolts on the front crankcase and shaped to give the cylinders the proper spacing. I slotted the cylinders and mounted them to the steel with JB Weld. There was a fourth cylinder but the cut out for the coil left too little material to hold up to the engine vibration and it was lost on one of my flights at this year's Scale Masters Champoinships. I think it is somewhere in a corn field in Southern Indiana. Anywhooooo.....it was painted flat black and the silver was sprayed on at an angle, leaving the black showing on most of the low points and silver showing on most of the high points. Then a small piece of lite ply was shaped to represent the engine case. From the 15 feet judging distance it completes the scale outline as viewed from side or the front.

Relatively quick and easy to accomplish.

Status: offline 		Thanks Willey. Yes, it is 1/3 scale and of my own design. I have plans available on disk........this is my first attempt at drawing plans and they're not the best there is out there, but they are usable.

In fact I have blown them up to half scale.......the wing ribs need some finessing at this size but the fuse pretty much translates to half scale with little fuss.

The N-11 flys great and I have 2 seasons on it now. The one weak spot on the design was the tail skid. The rest of it has held up very well.
