Here is a question I have that must be common to the experience of the people of this forum. What say you boaters. What is the usual running temp at about this spot. And what do you think is the max allowable temp.P.S. spot picked at random and any temp figures would be good. Thanks

Not going to be able to give you the number your after. Thing is that 99% of gas boats have a vertical plug design (unlike the slant plug design you show) which will have the cooling jacket surrounding the plug equally on all sides. Rule of thumb I have used is that the cap (which is not in direct contact with the cyl head - as it is "O" ring supported top and bottom) should be hot to the touch - but not too hot to touch. Not real scientific - but what in this hobby is.

Thanks for the response Justaddawatta.Thing is I am hellbent on using the very engine depicted, zen g 62 in a boat and need to know if my attempts to control the temp are successfull. The engine is supposed to be air cooled but I dont think that will cut it in boat operations. The engine will be exposed in typical v hull configuration[will have some flow]. To modify it I have considered a watercooled exhaust flange and small custom cap on uppermost top horizontal fin area. Or maybe custom aluminum shroud with small electric fan?

Well the G62 is another beast altogether and what 99% say is a good temp may not apply to the 62 in any event. I have two G62's that were modified for water cooling by Rich Ballantine (has not been doing it for a decade or more now). There was a guy who 3 or so years ago was also doing water cooling mods to the G62 but not sure that is still happening (think it might have been a short run).

With regard to the G62 - it is about as hard to start a motor as you will find (with a pull start). I have had people laugh at me at the lake thinking I am exaggerating - One guy got bruised knuckles from his attempts. It also breaks starters. The motor vibrates like no other. It also only revs to 12000rpm or so. But it will swing some of the largest RC props on the market (the 9515/3 is recommended - thing is HUGE). So hopefully you have a boat strong enough to handle this motor - it will need to be strong to take the pull starting - and handle the vibrations (I have had many pieces of hardware vibrate right off the boat - including drives and rudders). Here is a pic of one of my 62's http://imageevent.com/justaddwata/myboats/griffin

Well now I am depressed .Your words strike me hard as steel, but I can see you speak from first hand experience.Very nice cooling jacket,by the way.I have the motor, and the boat ,and the 9515 props. The boat is pretty stout, ply and designed it myself. Are you sure you can't offer some word of encouragement like ,it sure will be one bad wamma jamma! If I can't use this engine I must find another to [over]power this hull.[>:]Well thanks, any other info, advice, ect. will be accepted and understood. Here it is with a punny Quadra sitting in it.

With the cost of todays marine motors been so cheap i dont know whey you dont just buy an rcmk k30 that motor will push your boat to a good speed. If you want something on a budget then how about the new rev unlimited motors also from Bruce at Gizmo.

Ok,Ok I have seen the light. The writing on the wall.I have seen the variety of engines available on the market.I will stop trying to fight the current of impractibility. The homemade pullstarter mount will be removed and the motor will be packaged to sell on E-bay. It should fetch some decent money, its never run in box.I was so looking to turn that 9515 surface drive on this boat.Well back to the planning board. One last look, and another of my much more practical projects! .Thanks for the advice you all.

Sorry to be the breaker of bad news but it would be my belief that motor would destroy that beautiful boat is a relatively short amount of time without serious reinforcement.

When you add in the potential for handling issues brought about by swinging that huge prop and ultimately low top end speed in the mid-upper 40's - that boat would be better served by a smaller (higher performance) motor and I think you would be happier with a motor that is easier to start and less likely to be to root of many problems.
