Status: offline 		I was able to pick up a Ultra Stick Lite 120 ARF by Hangar 9 from a friend today. I am just not sure what engine to put in it. Can someone suggest what engine would be a good one to put in it?

Status: offline 		One friend uses his as a test bed for his new engines so he has had several. The last two were the DLE 20 and DLE 30. He left the 30 in the longest and it was a good combo.

Status: offline 		I have the original ( heavy) version and have a CRRC 40 on it and it really flies well  as it has a G23 and it didn't quite do it.
As stated the lite will be fine with a 20 and be lots of fun with a 30.
These are nice planes and again with Hangar 9 when they have a winner they never keep it going .

Status: offline 		The USL is a favorite. I roosted mine in an oak tree with serious damage to the wing and went to buy another and found it discontinued. I set to with the major rebuild effort and shortly after getting it air worthy, Horizon released the USL again for a couple of weeks and I laid one back. Last spring, the rebuilt crashed the second time and fatally and the back up was pressed into service. I'd hate to be without a stick and love the USL.

Both of mine are/were fitted with a 20cc, which I consider ideal as they provide unlimited vertical and keep the weight low.... and only an 8oz fuel tank is needed so the plane stays nimble.

Status: offline 		I have a 26cc CRRC in mine and It will climb out of sight. I take it to the field every time I fly. I keep hoping with a lot of people moving to gas. Hanger 9 would start making it again it is a great 1st gas plane.

Status: online 		My Ultra stick 120 Lite is a really fun and pleasent ship with a Webra 120 (two stroke), Its the one on the right in the photo.

I also have a Goldberg 120 Wildstick which is very close to the 120 lite in almost all parameters and for that one I got a little silly with 1.8 Moki (two stroke) but such fun

Yes, the fellow I mentioned installed the 20 in his and it was just fine, the 30 was just better for any 3-D type of stunts. He was fooling around with the engine testing to see how well he could get it to work, this was when they first came out, he ended up using a pipe on it before he went back to the 30. He also used the plane for testing the CRRC engines.

Status: offline 		I also have Great Planes Giant Stick with a DLE 30cc. The Giant Stick is a lot heavier than than the Ultra Stick Lite. The DLE 30cc flys the Giant Stick ok, but not as good as the 26cc in the Ultra Stick. You will be very happy with the DLE 30cc in your Stick.

Apologies for deviating from the original posting on this thread but shipping of an Ultra Stick Lite to Australia is prohibitive cost-wise.
What would be great is to get hold of a plan for one, or a similar airframe, to build my own version converted to electric flight.
Any suggestions on a availability of a Plan?

Status: offline 		I dont know if I have the lite or the heavy version, bought used with some damage. Fixed it and use it for an engine test bed. The first engine was a DLE30, lots of good thrust but no ground clearance. I stuck a 2x4 block under the landing gear and gained the prop clearance. Second engine was an rcgf 20cc. Not bad thrust and didnt need the landing gear block so it was removed. Its a good plane for utility work.

Cooler weather coming tomorrow. As to the Ultra Stick 120 versions, the lite version has clear transparent covering where as the original has solid colors. About 2.5 lbs difference between the two versions but the planforms are identical I think.

Status: offline 		Then mine was probably the heavier version. No matter, I stripped it and recovered in a Coast Guard scheme.

Yeah, I lost a trainer out in our woods doing a demo flight for a newbie yesterday. The wing broke in half and did a missile routine. The student was in shock and thought he did it. Took more than a few minutes to convince him he had nothing to do with it, all the builders fault. And I was the builder. Not a big confidence builder was it. We got him in the air later with a different plane. I was going out for search and rescue today but dont have enough time for a good search before the front gets here. I want to retrieve that new receiver.

Status: offline 		I'm thinking the briar thickets in Central Texas are as thick as any... we certainly have some where brer rabbit wouldn't even go but fortunately those are only about ten percent of our overflight areas. We are also fortunate that all of our overflight area is undeveloped except for a pipe line right away.

Hopefully your area is not covered with ****ly pear or grass burrs... yikes to both. We do have the occasional bullneddle but it doesn't take but one encounter with that to stay well clear henceforth. We have a fair amount of planes that perch aloft that sometimes require fetching a chain saw to cut a tree down

I expect other areas of the country have their issues such as corn fields, soy beans, ravines and snakes. We have a local hawk and owl that evidently keeps the snake population at bay though the hawk occasionally must feel threatened and dives at a plane now and then.

Status: offline 		Uugh! Bullneddle, I cringe at the very word. Lots of experience with that as a kid. Our over flight area is about 80% thicket with quite a bit mesquite and thorn bushes. Any searching that needs to be done needs to be done now, during the winter months. There are about 6 planes or so lost out there. Not a good idea to search in the summer because of rattle snakes. One of my winter projects is to build a beeping black box that is self powered. Just pull a "Remove before Flight" pin to activate it and it will wait a given time span (about 15 minutes) then start beeping with a loud device. I hope to get 48 hours out of it by controlling the frequency of beeps.

I've had several US120 Lites with engines including a Saito 180 (Way too much motor), Saito 120 (excellent combination) and my last one I put a Rimfire 160 on the front of it and ran it on 10s 5000 mAh Flightpower batteries. I have to admit that my favorite of the three was the electric version. Also a friend of mine built one and put a 3W28 on the front. AWESOME is the only word to describe that combination. It would hover at just over 1/4 throttle. My US120 Lite was probably my favorite all around, any weather plane...........................

If you don't have any luck with plans for a Stick and you decide to get a kit, look into Aircraft Model Research (AMR) in Canada. They offer a 30cc size Stick kit that is only slightly larger that the US120. The kits are a little on the heavy side, but the quality is second to none. I've considered getting their 30cc size and putting my Rimfire on it, but I'd probably go up to 12S so I can turn a larger prop due to the extra weight of the plane.

Status: offline 		Snakes and thorn bushes don't make for good summer searching... too hot to wear protective clothes and treacherous.

Yeah, I don't think it would be too hard to build a device that would start sounding after twenty minutes elapse from reset. A nine volt battery would sound a piezo buzzer a good while and they will put out in the range of 75-100 db. We sometimes find planes in the tree canopy just by working the servos and listening.

I might throw something on a bread board and see what happens. A couple of 555IC timers and a few, transistors, resisters, caps and buzzer would do it. No problem for most Hams.

One of our guys came up short last week with his beautiful large AJ Slick and put it into a briar patch and peppered the underside of the wings with pin holes ( I see that other word won't work).

Right on.

Mine stays on a float charger as the goto plane for either windy days or those shorter stays at the field where the easiest setup is desired. I'm on my second after the demise last spring of #1 that had over six hundred flights on it, but there are no more laid back. I can't believe Horizon hasn't offered it again for a spell. I would lay in another for sure.

My guess is that Hanger Nine wanted to raise the price to something Horizon didn't think would sell in a competitive stick market.

Status: offline 		As easy as they are to build, I sure wouldnt pay too much for them. You dont really need plans, just the wing airfoil and you should be good with general dimensions.
