I'm curious as to how many of you run the Savage stock air-filter vs after-market ones...specifically are they worth it.

Example is: http://www.motorsaver.com/savage.htm

Thanks

F4.6 5+ gallons, LRP30 nearly 2 gallons. Both on stock filters. I clean them regularly with a splash of nitro fuel to cleanse the two elements out, then i dab filter oil all over them, put them in a zip lock baggy and just squeeze it all around to make sure that it has an even coat. Afterwards, I wrap them in a paper towel and lightly squeeze the excess oil out.

The motorsaver has the same concept as the stock filter, but with an added screen mesh that's reinforced with plastic, so it would provide more protection from larger particles sticking to the filter.

Thank you, sir. I should have noted I am an freak when it comes to air-filter cleaning...meaning after EVERY time out running (even if it is just up and down the street), I wash both the inner and outer filter with soapy hot water and then re-lube. Some folks make fun of me for being so zealous, but it takes all of five minutes...so why not?

I'm curious if there any advantage to getting an after-market (i.e engine performance). Or, am I just wasting money, seeing as I keep them like new anyway?

Thanks!

That is definitely over kill on the cleaning

As for performance, if a different filter allows more air in, then I would assume that it is more vulnerable to allowing debris in as well. You also have to keep in mind that the carburetor can only allow as much air in as it is built for. Modding the crank and sleeve would definitely help with the motor breathing much better.

Here is a comparison between the motor saver (left) hpi (center) and a random filter I did a while ago. IMO the motor saver will protect just as well as the hpi but it has a substantial gain in air flow in comparison. I use them almost exclusively.
