I have a Peak Electronics Sirius Charge Pro Series field charger. It has 250, 500, and 1000 mah settings. I want to charge my Sanyo 1650 mah NiMh batteries with it. Will this fast charger damage my NiMh batteries ? It charges my NiCds just fine, but I am told that NiMh shouldn't be fast charged ? ? ?

Thank's for your help. - Ed

In my opionion any battery can be charged at 0.8C so even your fastest setting should be okay. That said you may get more cycles if you charge at 500mah when you are not in a hurry. Anyhone else?!......

The Sirius charger charges all batteries at 500 mA. The TX side assumes 500 mAh cells and may time out before reaching 1650. Mine will put only about 1200 in on the TX side.

NiMh batteries can and will become damaged if charged at too high an amperage where NiCd's can take it.  It is the heat generated during charging that can cause the damage(actually too much heat can damage any chemistry battery). I would charge it  at the  0.5 amp setting  for about 3.5 hours max .

3.5hrsx 500mah= 1750mah. If charging from flat I don't think that's long enough given the inefficiency of charging and that the charge reduces as the battery approaches full.

The Sirius charger that I am using doesn't have a timed option, it's a "peak" charger. It stops charging when it estimates the batteries are fully charged. So is there a chance that it will not fully charge my NiMh's ? I'm also concerned about them over heating if charged too fast. Is there anyone out there who is using this charger to successfully charge 1650 mah NiMh's ?

Don't worry about it. That chemistry is relatively stable. Put them on to charge when you know you will be about. When they are slightly warm they are done!
