I have a family member who wants an RC boat for Christmas. It can't possibly cost over $100 total ($50 would be ideal).

I'm not asking for a miracle! Just wondering if anyone has any ideas. I appreciate the help if you can.

I found this one, but don't know anything about it:

This one looks quite nice, but backordered:

This hull is nice, but I don't know what is needed to put it together. Hobby King is confusing:

To be honest everything posted here is a flaming piece of crap.

Your NOT going to get anything worth a crap (worth buying) for $50. $100 is a REAL ROUGH go.

For the money this hull/hardware looks to be a good combo. I got the 22.5" mono 1 and put a different stinger on it and the boat runs really really good! I would imagine this would be good too. I wouldnt buy anything other than the hull/hardware as their other items are over priced.

Thats if you want a mono.

I hear these are good too:
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__20364__Centurion_Mini_Brushless_Catamaran_Boat_450mm_ARTR.html

Just need the cheap radio and a few cheap abtts (all at same place) and you would be set. Expect to spend closer to $150ish though.

Other than that look for something good/used.

I have a difference of opinion. The Joysway Warrior (second boat listed from Hobbyking) gets great reviews and is well suited for someone getting into the sport. You can easily upgrade by changing to a 2S lipo battery for faster speed. HK stays out of stock (popular boat), but here is one listed on ebay. Hope that helps!

You say for a friend for XMAS.  Now for $50.00, it won't be much and you want it to be for a friend, you won't have a friend after they start using the XMAS present.!!!! Sundogz really found something on ebay and worth the time to investigate. That's a good deal for $80.00 and can be upraded  by strenghting the hull and motor and prop. Really got to get this boat, winter project.

Baleanoptera Musculus for less than $50 on some sites. While the radio is junk, it does function and the boat is fairly quick. The best part of this boat is it can be upgraded fairly cheaply, and the hull is tough and can handle a lot more power. Currently mine has been upgraded to running on the original brushed motors, with a $10 HK speed control and a $20 HK 2.4 surface radio.Steering is with a second-hand standard servo and an HK small aluminum rudder. Boats a hoot and eventually will get twin brush less motors. Also, in its original form its safer for kids as props will only run if they are submerged.

Well upgrading isn't cheap when replacing equipment that's a good grade ( quality ). When using cheap equipment , you get what you pay for. This ends up costing double in the long haul. Sundogz found an excellent buy in my books. I have a Grauper 480 which runs 28,000 rpm and in a Joyway should be a blast but size of lipo bothers me.

True, but for those of us who don't run in competition, a first boat doesn't need to be first rate. It needs to be fun. No inexpensive boat will be racing. If I want to go faster I'll run my SV 27 or Wildcat. An inexpensive boat has the advantage that if you don't enjoy the hobby you aren't out much and if it sinks like one of mine did after hitting a turtle its ce la ve. Our group runs some very expensive boats, but for fun the favorites are stock Minimonos. List price $139.

I guess the O.P. has to decide if he wants a plastic "toy grade" boat or if he wants a "hobby grade".

Personally I wouldnt give a toy grade boat unless it was to a child.

If you dont mind doing the building, you could get a FighterCat Bling Rocket 25 hull shipped for under $50. Then on Hobbyking pick up the stinger and rudder and everything else for the boat EXCEPT flex/prop shaft and brass stuffing tube.

I believe Exceed had some smaller monos around the $100 mark also?

Looks like a lot of b oat for $130:

Awesome, thanks for the replies. It's for my father in law who wants to have fun with his grandkids.

Based on the options and reviews, I think I will wait for the Warrior on Hobby King and hopefully it comes in time for Christmas.

I really like the looks of the 23" RC EP Deep-Vee Ocean Force from R2, and saw that one before you linked it. Is there a setup guide anyone can recommend? I'm curious what kind of running gear these things need. I have done planes and air boats - no inboard boats.

Thanks!

OK if this is something younger kids are going to be running I would suggest something like a Reef Racer 2. Not the fastest things around but are real good for kids.

If its going to be adult operated then go for the faster boats.

I had the 22.5" Mono1 and I put a 2900kv outrunner and on 3S 2200mah it runs pretty good. I sold it to my buddy before using it and they love the boat. The outrunner I used is this one:
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=11179

It propels the boat nicely without overpowering and provides for good speeds upwards of 30+ mph.

So you would get the Reef Racer over the Joysway?

How about the Joysway Magic Vee?

That boats only 9" long, has a motor the size of a pencil and a 5 amp speed control.

Oh yes the Reef Racer 2 over that any day. For slightly more you can get a wildcat that can be upgraded.

I dont mean this in a negative way, but if you only want to spend $50 and maybe $100 perhaps you should be looking at a different gift. Unless you can get a hull/hardware on the cheap and source the rest new/used for cheap or a good used boat for cheap you are stuck in this "toy grade" hell.

I had the Mini Rio and it sucked. I upgraded the battery cables and put in a hopped up brushed motor and it was OK then. The other boats posted are not hobby grade and by the time the upgrades are completed you still have a half arsed toy grade boat... Especially considering the end user will be a novice to the hobby.

In the end I think that Exceed boat or the Mini Mono would be your best bet. Sure its over your max price but they are not piles of crap. But hey you be the judge on whats right for you. All I can say is think of the look on this older mans face as he opens up a childs toy boat... lol

I would go along with Mini mono. Its a great little smooth water boat. Because its fast for its size, it does tend to get catty in anything over a ripple and flips very easily. It does take an experienced hand on the throttle at full speed, but watch the water conditions and its a dandy. Reef racer is slower, but does have the advantage of being self-righting, so better for kids to run. Had one upgraded to brush less, and it was a hoot right up to the turtle incident.
