You may see a sale of sorts at Tower or Hobby People but don't expect anything like the sales they hype on TV for mainstream consumer items.

I know there is a sale at Hobby People this week but they have one every holiday. As Carr mentioned, it's nothing overly special with any killer deals. Good but not great.

Hobby people has degenerated to a new sale about every two to four days if you happen to be on their internet list. They must be running out of creative new names to call the sales. Actually I think this may be a problem for all the hobby retailers who are in a major fight for survival.

They wouldn't be in trouble if the had something people wanted or needed. Only thing I ever buy there is fuel, maybe a piece of wood if I need it. Once in a blue moon I will even buy some glue. My last trip to town I went to both hobby Town and Hobby People. I needed some props, 15 and 16 inch, none in stock over 12 inches. I asked the counter man for a Great Planes adjustable motor mount for 70 to 90, he asked me if I had the part number? After watching him suffer going through the racks behind the counter I finally showed him what a motor mount looked like. Wrong size but they had a GP mount in stock. That was Hobby Town in Vegas. Hobby People just pointed to the isle and said all the mounts we have are there, only had one for a .46. Can't understand why they are having problems. I asked at both places for a fuel tank bung and you should have seen the look on the counter peoples faces.. The new Nice Twice had everything except the motor mount. If they don't have anything to buy I guess maybe they could have a problem. They did have a good stock of little Choppers and cars.

I agree...in my area we have the same problem. I realize in some areas it is not the case and hobby shops cater to their clients. I have been in the local hobby shops around here a few times and about all I ever come out with is a pack of screws or something just to give them some business to support them.

They just don't have anything I need. I sometimes might look at their servos or some other items and see a price that can be four times higher than what it should be. I have to even negotiate a buy so I just forget it and move on. Forget buyin any props of any size - never see them at all, just small stuff.

Maybe I am wrong, but in many cases I think it cost us as buyers much more to go to a local hobby shop to buy something. BTW, I have rarely seen anything on Black Friday that you could not just pick the phone up and negotiate the price any other time, especially if you are talking about an ARF or engine, etc.

We do have one local hobby shop that is still OK. It used to be great or outstanding but it was sold this year and the new owners haven't gotten the complete feel for what the locals want and need. The original owner was also a pilot and new most of the locals from all of the three main flying areas and new what type of planes were the most popular. He also catered to builders. When he said he would order something he did it and phoned you when it came in, usually three days or every Wednesday depending on when you ordered the item.
The new owners haven't figured out the order thing yet but they are working on it. When they don't have something you ask for they write it down and will have it in stock the next time your there so they are building the inventory up. It's getting better and the main counter man is also an old pilot and builder so he doesn't look at you with glazed eyes when you ask for something like a motor mount.
I know times are tough but how can a hobby shop hire people that have never been in the hobby?? A motor mount is about as basic as it gets. I don't expect most counter people to know what a rigging coupler is but a fuel tank bung and motor mount?
The local Hobby People is pretty up on things as long as it's electric. I have asked for a CM-6 spark plug and shown a flat of glow plugs though.
The Hobby Town is one jump from useless most the time but all three hobby shops are within a few blocks of each other so I stop at them all when I do a road trip.
Sense the really good hobby shop has sold I do phone them and ask if they have what I need in stock instead of driving across town and past the Vegas strip, if it isn't in stock it's back to mail order. The local mark up on prices isn't too bad so I still try to buy local before I mail order. I still like having local hobby shops to deal with as long as the counter person didn't just walk in off the street.

Hmm, just got one of those for my OS, $5.25 in the small engine section of the local True Value hardware store

Enough of marriage or enough of your hobby? I would think by the time the lawyers are done there won't be much left. Sorry 18 yrs means so little.

No worries Wingspam - I've been divoriced for about 10 years now. At this point I buy a new plane every couple of months. I use the dinning room table for building. Best of all I ended up with custody of my son in the process and he is kewl with everything I want to do as long as I leave him alone with his video games - LOL - sign of the times I guess

Planning on going to Hodes Hobbies (Andersonville, GA)  for Black Friday. The best RC store in the Southeast and about the best flying  field in the SE also. Oh yea I will take a few planes on Friday to get a little more stick time.

The Hobby Shack near me had their sale today. They actually opened at 8:00 am and in addition to their normal black Friday sales event, had a special 4 hour only sale on some items. I got there at 8:10 to pick up some Powermaster YS 20/20 fuel which was priced at $14.99 a gallon during their 4 hour only special sale. I thought I'd beat the crowd, get my fuel and be happy. BUT NNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOO! I had to wait in line to get what I wanted and the guy in front of me kept questioning if he had the right fuel that was discounted. The ad showed the correct stock # and the correct description but used older artwork so the ad picture didn't match the revised can on the shelf. That's when it occurred to me that maybe carrying a taser with me may come in handy...............Just kiddin' It was worth the wait for YS 20/20 fuel at this price.
