bayfire300 -> GT qs8004 and 8006 heli's (11/20/2012 11:25 PM)

Hello Everyone,
I am getting back into R/C Heli's after 6 years. I have failed to fly A Humminbird FP and a Blade CP so I gave it up,
I recently came across the GT models on E-bay and bought the qs8004 (30") and the qs8006 (53").
They both are 3.5ch. I wanted something easy to fly to get back into this hobby.
Both are easy to fly indoors or outdoors w/ no wind or breeze. What I did find out which is rather interesting is I put the qs8006 main and tail rotor blades on the smaller qs8004 (they fit)
Blades are a bit longer and Really HELP OUTSIDE EVEN WITH A BREEZE...easier to get off the ground and better response.
So if anyone has or is looking at the qs8004 model get a set of blades for the 8006 it will really help outdoors w/ a wind issue.

In the future I intend to get a F/P single rotor heli again ......Which one I am not sure maybe the double horse. I really want to be able to fly a non-coaxial copter.
I am open to any reccomendation you may have on a single rotor heli for beginners.

Thank you for reading.
Otto

Something like the Blade MCPX is a good next step.  They are quite hardy and can be used all the way up into 3D.

I would like to add that the stock motors that come w/ the GT qs8004 have a 10 tooth gear and after a while they dont mesh well w/ the main blade gears ,So what I did was purchased 2 motors for a Double horse 9118 Helicopter which have 9 tooth gear....they mesh much better, quieter and has plenty of power. So if you have a GT qs8004 I sugjest you get motors for a DH 9118 or 90539 ( same motors) You will be happier. I love the way this Heli flies w/ the tail mod has much better foward motion than the DH9118
I do however think that the Double Horse 9118 is better built and has a 2.4ghz radio system.

Also some MODS I made to thei GT qs8004 include
12mm carbon fiber tail boom from fly carbon
I cut out the botton of the canopy to swap batteries easier. The canopy is held on by 4 screws so changing batts was a pain.
I also got carbon fiber vinyl sheet and coated the blades.

12.25.12
From Dogunner
Question:  What is the voltage on GT QS8006 batt.packs(stock) after a flight & 30 minutes off charge
using the factory charger.  Mine  was 14.79 after flight & 16.80 off charge.  Is  16.8 too much
to the PCB.   This heli is advertised as 14.8 v. ?????????

Thanks

 14.8 volt battery = 4 cells x 3.7 volts (4S)

Batteries are rated by their storage charge.  Max charge is what you will get when you charge them and a 4s at 4.2  comes out to 16.8 volts.

I am going to offer some free advice and remember: free advice is worth every penny you pay for it.
I work at Hobbytown USA and we sell a bazillion coaxial helicopters this time of year and usually in Feb we get a BUNCH of folks that really like their "toy" helicopter but want one that will fly around and "do tricks." First thing I do is put them on our demo Realflight 6.5 simulator with a 50 size collective pitch model and SHOW them that flying a real collective pitch 3D model is not like flying their coaxial. I TRY and sell them a sim first and then something like a Blade 120 SR. It seems a bit better for a beginner than the mCPX as it is larger and easier to work with. The mCPX is a great little heli BUT it is very small and gets out of sight in a hurry, same with the Nano. When they master the 120 SR, we then recommend the 130X or even a 450 size model depending on the pilot's proficiency.
Point of this post, go from Coaxial to SIM, then CP model.
