I have been setting up my propeller position for hand propping on a gas BME 44 as follows: Top blade at position 45 d right of center with the magnet on the hub at approximately 45d prior to the magnetic sensor on the compression stroke.  I seem to be having fair but not great success on fast starts. Takes 4 handprops to fire with the choke on and then 7-8 handprops to fire. Seems like a lot of handpropping. Am I missing something here???

Some engines just require more flipping then others. I set mine at 10 O'Clock when the piston is at just on compression. One flip after the pop on choke usually fires my Brison and RCS. My Zinoah G-62 never did like to hand start so I put a spring starter on it and it popped on choke first spin and fired on one spin after that. All the gas engines I have ever owned liked a few drips of gas to drip out the carb before I wasted my time flipping.

I drill mine at about 1 to 2 o'clock which is just before compression and they start very nicely. Sometimes some engines start a little differently than others. I think 3 or 4 pops on choke is about the norm and about 3 or 4 off choke is normal. I have one that starts with less and one that takes a tad more. My observations of other flyers has shown about the same.

I also put the prop on at TDC around 2&8 /3&9 o'clock for starting and also for dead sticks so it's not pointed toward the ground. If they have a choke then they will usually pop on or before 3 flips and off choke usually start on or before 4 flips. If no choke I manually choke it by having full throttle ,kill on,  finger in/over carb, rocking the prop back&forth until my finger gets wet. Then it usually fires right away.
Check to make sure fuel is being drawn on choke and after choke. Maybe you are getting not enough or too much fuel and it's getting flooded. You can tell when it's just right by rocking the engine (kill on) and listen for a slight squishing sound.
A trick to use if you think it's flooded is to rotate or flip the engine backwards(kill on) a few times and that usually cleans out enough fuel so it will start.
