Status: offline 		Yep, did that some years ago. Really works!! Ken Willard use to do it with a handkerchief crewed on a plywood firewall that made a parachute that gently floated down after a run. I can remember mine almost flying out of sight a few times!!

The first video, if you read the comments, you see where I informed the poster as to the builder of the model.
That last one is a Skoots by Jesse Shepherd, Jr. Floyd Harp flys them at SMALL and sent me a plan from 1992, Aero Crafted Models in Bedford TX.

If anyone finds any other cool .010 videos please post them here. I guess .020's are okay, but I'd prefer .010.

I thought they were fictional also but Steve Adam's throttles are/were very real. Could it be one of his?

Goodness knows I bugged him enough about them over the years. I believe he had a machinist friend helping make those and is no longer in the biz, or some such folklore.

MJD, what was fictional was the claim that they were a new, revolutionary developement.
He either had a patent pending or was able to buy himself a full blown patent for this 100 piece device that does not pass ANY of the tests for what is patentable.
It looks like a Rube Goldberg contraption and after hearing all the hype it was a real, "let down" to see what it actually was.

Status: offline 		In the end, was it basically a variable exhaust restrictor throttle? Or was there more going on?

Seems to me if it was a variable restrictor with a bit of internal volume, you could scam some tank pressure.

Status: offline 		It looks kind of like a tiny piston ring compression tool...for assembling engines. It has a thin [tempered?] steel band that wraps the cylinder. The band [cumberbund?] has 90 degree bends at the extreme ends so that tiny [#2-56?] hardware can clamp it tight to the cylinder. There is bracketry that is involved with this hardware to facilitate a connection to a servo.
I'm over simplifying it, the actual drawing has an unbelievably high parts count. It has 10 things doing the job of 1, here, there and everywhere.
Beyond the hype...it is unimaginable that someone would go through the process to get this thing patented.

Status: offline 		From what Al has said, you have 5 ozs max to play with for a sporty .010 RC model.
If throttle is a big enough issue, then a remote barrel valve would seem to be as simple a solution as any... but exhaust extensions probably hurt top end power.
I just don't understand the need.

Status: offline 		we did this a couple of years ago using streamers also a touch and bounces off a picnic table with an electric slow flyer the engines faired a lot better. we were a little too low a couple of times, the flying engines for cox 049s martin

IIRC, it was more a matter of the piston/cyl assemblies not being available anymore. Getting the OD's ground down on the cylinders isn't an issue for any machine shop with a centerless grinder or a surface grinder with a whirley.

Status: offline 		The .010 has a unique difference to the rest of the Cox's except the very early ones. The cylinder has a ledge on the bottom that sits on the case which means the ring has to be in two pieces. And the .010 P/C assembly is a rare find.
