I haven't built a warbird since 2004 and recently I started getting the "itch" to build one so I purchased a new version of the CARF P-51.   I will be using a Hacker A100-10 motor for power.  I will also be using a Benedini sound system to simulate the sound of the Packered Merlin engine so I decided to kick off this build with creation of a speaker box.  It looks like the best place to put it is in the area where the fuel tank goes.  I took some measurements and made some templates out of card stock.  The templates were assembled and placed in the fuse to verify the fit.  Next, the parts for the box were cut from 1/8th aircraft ply and epoxied together.  Holes for the speakers where cut out of the side of the fuel tank area.  The speaker box will be held in place with screws going through the top of the fuel tank area into the top of the box.  The layer of glass at the top of the fuel tank area is a little flimsy so I made up a stiffner out of honeycomb material.  I cut a new firewall former out of 1/4 inch aircraft ply.  Once the firewall and honeycomb stiffner were fitted, the inside of the fuse was sanded with 80 grit and the firewall and honeycomb stiffner were glued in place with hysol.

Hi Kirk, looking good. Don't you think the 4 blade prop would have good enough sound?

its really no use with Kirk here Bob

We've lost him to the jet scene. this is his
futile attempt to act like he still belongs with
the warbird gang. and he picks an ARF
to "build"

I would love to put a TurboProp in one of these and convert it into a Piper PA-48!

One of these would make a cool turbo prop. The turbine Legend.

You should make todd jealous and put one of those Kolm engines on it. How cool would that be! Besides they cost similar to a turbin sooo your jet standing will be intact!

@ Kirk,

Are you going to experiment with the speaker box?
Im asking because with two speakers and a sealed box you may consider porting the box to get airflow. You can also wire the speakers opposite polarity so they push and pull together moving more air in the box. You want more speaker cone throw for max sound performance.
A couple kit question;
Are the panel and mold lines improved on the new version?
Did they correct the wing details like the extra filler cap or formation lights?

Awesome project, looking forward to seeing it come together. I sold my kit in favor of the Corsair.

Thanks Chris.  I had the previous version of the kit and from what I can tell, the detail hasn't changed except now in some areas the rivets are barely noticable and will disappear with paint.  I will reburn those to give them some definition.  The new version is lighter though.  The fuse out of the box weighed just under 5 pounds.

Not yet but I did do some flying this past weekend.  Probably the last time for this year.  The 10-day forecast is showing rain for 8-days straight .

A little more work done.  The cowl has been mounted.  I made 6 mounting tabs out of 1/8th aircraft ply.  4 of the tabs go into the fuse and get blind nuts.  The other 2 tabs go into the cowl to help keep it aligned.  After the cowl was mounted, I found the top rear section of the cowl could be easily moved from side to side.  I made up a former and glued it in place in the rear section.  Now it doesn't have any side to side movement.  Some filler work is needed to fill in the gap along the sides of the cowl.  One thing that will need to be done is to sand away the seam line and screws on the top of the cowl and re add them on the center line.

More progress. The speaker box has been completed and installed. All of the fuse cut outs have been roughly opened up. They will be fine tuned as I work in that area. The postion of the tail wheel mounting plate rails was determined and they were glued in place with hysol.

The standoffs I ordered from PSP arrived so it was time to install the motor.  An electric motor can be installed closer to the spinner than a gas motor so the first thing needed was a new firewall.  I used a contour guage to get the correct shape of the bottom of the fuse and cut out a couple formers from 1/8th inch aircraft ply and laminated them together with epoxy.  I taped a couple of standoffs together to get a length of 3.25 inches and tack glued them to the original firewall.  The new firewall was pushed against the standoffs and hysoled in place.  This allowed the transfer of the right thrust and down thrust from the original firewall to the new firewall.  The next day the firewalls were drilled and the top two standoffs were bolted in place.  These standoffs anchor the top of the new firewall and prevent it from moving.  Next, the motor was installed using 2 inch standoffs.  I also received some 4-40 counter sunk flat head slotted machine screws from Micro Fasteners.  I'll be using these to secure the cowl.

Thanks Sean.  That would be cool, you can never go wrong with AC/DC blaring from a set of speakers
