Actually, at TDC on the exhaust stroke both valves wil be open for about 40 degrees, "overlap". That's another way to tell if you're correct.

This is confusing. Both my OS manual and Bill Robison stated to check the clearance at TDC of the compression stroke. Ken6PPC, now you are saying it should be checked at TDC between the exhaust valve closing and the intake valve opening. I just checked the clearance on an engine and the clearance it tighter at the TDC between the two valves' movements, but it's correct at TDC during the compression stroke. Can you explain why it's better to set it your way?

Many thanks,
David

Sorry for the confusion. You should check for VALVE LASH at TDC on the compression stroke. I check TIMING at TDC on the exhaust stroke.

Thank you that worked great, but just one more problem. She starts great and runs great but she will not run at idle when the glow starter is taken off. New plug and new fuel and low end neddle is set at factory setting and the high end at manual specs. Do you think its coming from the carb or somthing I miss on the vavles?

Sounds like a glow plug issue to me.
The plug you are using may not be hot enough.
On 4 strokes I like using the OS Type F plug.
If it is not the plug you are probably going to have to adjust
the low speed needle. Never count on a "factory" setting.

As was mentioned above the factory setting is way too rich, did you set the High Speed needle using a tachometer?

Ken, your engine must be timed differently than mine, this is a 1991 high compression 1.50, I pic. #1 at TDC compression stroke of course both valves are closed, in pic. #2 at TDC on exhaust stroke both valves are about 1/4 open.

My bad, Ken6PPC. You did say timing. I obviously didn't read your post carefully.

Thanks,
David

That is interesting, Hobbsy. I am pretty certain there was very little valve open overlap on that 1.80, if any at all. Of course, I really couldn't SEE the actual valves operating. I was just watching the lifters and rockers.

Tell you what. I have a Saito 150S that isn't on a plane right now. I'll take it apart when I get some time, and see how the valves act at TDC on the exhaust stroke. I'll report back here when I find out if they are both open and have overlap.

Knowing that Murphy is ALWAYS at work, and knowing that my luck is usually BAD, I check the action of the valves in the manner I described BEFORE I take it apart. Then I know how the valves should react after reassembly. Other than running the engine, that is about the only way I know to check timing. If the timing is off, I had rather find it BEFORE I put it all back together.

I haven't found one of my cams off yet, but it seems like it would be really easy to get it off one tooth, when reattaching the cam box.

No harm done, David. Perhaps someone else misunderstood that, and your questioning it helped save them some grief!
