I'm thinking about various buggies to get my 12 year old for X-mas. He plans on racing this year (nothing serious just club racing with me - new as well).

I was actually looking at something like the HPI D8S (a race spec RTR), but then noticed on AMain "The Car" is being sold now for $299.00

I recall a lot of hype when this first came out, but have not heard much about it since. They seem to have a "Yellow addition" out now that is $399.00.

Can anyone provide feedback on The Car? I'm not looking for an XB9 or anything for him (yet), but want to ensure he has something that will give him a fighting chance while he learns to race for the next 6-8 months, then upgrade him to a kit.

Thanks!

p.s. Any feedback on the D8S is appreciated as well. ;-)

Never mind. he and I just spoke about it and he wants a kit to try and build himself. ;-) In thinking about it, if I'm going to spend money, might as well get something he can keep a while instead of upgrading again in the same year.

I found a Mugen MBX6r on sale for 399 so am going to get thim that, I believe. (Trying to get a kit < $400)

I considered a D8, but seeing as he's getting me D8T for Xmas - I figured they would be pretty much identical.

Thanks

The two of you having the same brand is a very, very good idea.. Truggies and buggies from the same company often share a few parts, and if nothing else you can source parts for each at the same place. I highly recommend, whatever one of you gets, that the other gets the same brand.. MBX6R & MBX6RT, D8 & D8T, etc..

I would recommend the Mugens. You're right: why upgrade later? You can race a Mugen for a few years, AND, if need be, they tend to have a better resale value than a lot of other brands.. Spending more at the beginning, especially for the kits and servos, is just the wisest course of action... - partially because it's actually probably the cheapest over time..

JohnP, if you're looking to get kitted out for some serious racing in buggy or truggy, Amain has a massively attractive deal on an Italian-built RB engine pipe combo..

http://www.amainhobbies.com/product_info.php/cPath/1_23_2156_1923_31/products_id/243891/n/RB-Products-Blast-V9-Limited-Edition-21-5-Port-Off-Road-Engine-w-2045-Tuned-Pipe-Turbo-Plug

Get your cart up to $250 and save $25 with the code CALPNOV1225... That engine should be really good, especially for the money.. Think the deal only goes through today, maybe 2moro...

Don't underestimate HB.  Parts that interchange between the D8 and D8T will save you money on inventory.

The name on them is HB, but the cars that won those races were about as far from stock as you can possibly get.. I.e. barely D8-based.. Still, the D8 is by many accounts very good value for money..

Mugen just came out witha 7 though, so perfect time to buy up a 6 cheap...

Barely D8 based?  Wrong.  Because HB is more open about mods made, you think all the other brands don't test/tune and improve  the designs?  You should know from following RCTech threads that it is very easy to mod a D8 to Tessman's specs.  The new D812 will be interesting, but not all that different.

No it is not.  But you could list them if you want.

Besides, anyone expecting to get an out of the box vehicle which matches the pro's is seriously out of touch.  Anyone just starting out or a club racer shouldn't concern themselves with duplicating a Pro's machine.

I don't believe anyone is underestimating HB. As noted, this week I'm purchasing a D8T (and yes, Tessman's recent dominance did play a factor in it). ;-) I'm simply wanting to try different manufacturers before sticking to just one. I found the MBX6r for 399, which is the sole reason I'm getting it...else I'd probably get him a D8. I'm unsure, but I doubt the MBX6r is inferior to the D8, so I'm getting to add a different manufacturer to my fleet...at the price point I was looking at for him (which also happens to be the same for a D8)..

Remember, we're going to be running these together, so interchanging parts is not as big of an advantage if I were running these separately.

Additionally - and I could be mistaken - but  I was under the impression that Adam Drake is one of the few drivers to run mainly stock on his car. I did read that Tessman had quite a few prototype parts on his D8/D8T during2012 ROAR and that "the vast majority" of his parts were mod and most not available on the market (and no..I can't name them - unsure if it's even been disclosed yet)

All I was saying is, that being the case, Tessman winning this or that has very little to do with an out of the box D8T. Except empty - though successful, as you guys are saying you'd buy HB based on whatever Tessman did - marketing of course..

I personally would buy a D8t, but I couldn't care less about what Tessman runs(unless he ran stock..). I'd buy it based off all the positive feedback of normal Joe Schmoe users...

Are there any normal Joe Schmoe posters?   Anyone that buys a certain brand/model is rarely able to bring themselves to admit that they bought a POS.  Actually, among the major brands, there is rarely a real dud.  So perhaps the best strategy is to just buy a major brand, within an acceptable price range, and hope for the best.  The world's most expensive buggy isn't going to make anyone a Cody King.

I bought an Exceed Forza that would label a POS.

Yea - I know what you meant. ;-)

My comment was a bit tongue in cheek. I DO own one (and am proud of it). ;-) You recently got the Hyper 7....so I imagine you can see the difference. Or you will if you like to bash.

There are lots of posts about this, and really don't mean to offend. I have a love/hate relationship with mine. It's purely an experimental car for me now, and that's awesome as I'm unafraid to mess anything up and it allows me to be creative. It does actually move and handle well, but would not recommend taking it off-road (even just on grass). Again, apologies if I offended anyone - as I am an owner of one too, but IMHO compared to "more expensive" cars it is subpar with respect to its durability. Parts are dirt cheap for it, though.

Oh yeah I love the hyper 7. I wish I hadn't wasted my money on two Jato's before getting the hyper 7. I took some pics after I put AKA rims and new rubber on it last night. I will try and post soon. It is fast enough for me, speed of the Jato is ridiculous and uncontrollable without a long distance. I have found my Jato to be very flimsy too for the cost. I think I've broken everything on the Jato that can be broken. I finally gave up on stock gearing and replaced everything with hardened steel. The hyper 7 has all steel already and steel shock towers etc. Weighing in at almost 12 pounds its a beast and with the macstar. 28 and a 17 tooth clutchbell I am flying as fast as I would want to with standard duel brakes to stop quickly.
Im kind of upset right now with Hobao or HPI for the seemingly mishandled official north american distribution. I have my lhs and a national online shop telling me they can't get certain parts for an unknown amount of time until HPI and Hobao get their act together. Even the HPI rep I am in communications with can't give me an accurate timeframe.

One thing I can't find is a cooling head for the macstar. 28.. at a reasonable price that is, ofna will sell it for 60 something but that's half the cost of a new engine.

Thanks for intel on the Jato. I seriously considered getting one, but at the last moment opted for the Savage X 4.6. I've heared mixed reviews about the Jato.....but would like one to just tear up and down the street with.

Regarding the cooling heard, have you considered stripping and re-polishing it (assyming it is no fins are bent)? The pic above is not for the Mac* .28 (although unsure if they are interchangable). The part you want is OFN53081

Will that fit the macstar 28? As john said, that isn't the head for the macstar 28 I have. I can't do anything with the current head, two fins are broken and a piece missing. Sad shape, like I said in previous post, previous owner abused his stuff obviously.
