I got a Rossi R45 Aereo black head that I need suggestions on. I would like to know what you recommend as far as fuel type/nitro %, glow plug type, prop size, etc. I will install it in my CG Tiger 2

Thanks

Great engine. Will not run reliably on anything over 0-5% nitro. Designed to run on European FAI type 0% nitro fuel. If new it came with head shims...if you have them install one or both to lower the compression ratio. 11-7 to 12-6 for prop.

Thanks Mike for your reply. I bought it used (almost new) but it does not have the shims. None of the hobby shops in the area carry 0-5% nitro, so I am incline to go with the shims which are pretty inexpensive at Rossi. They list shims for Rossi 45-53 which are 0.1mm, so will I need 2? I am concerned that I will loose power/rpm's by lowering compression. Is that going to be the case? Will the power loss be noticeable if any?

Thanks

According to Rossi, I can run 5%-15% without head shims as long as it isnt too hot and engine stays cool. Shims are only needed on very hot days or when engine is running hot. I will throw it in the test stand with an 11X6 and 15% nitro and see how it does.

Thanks for all your help!

Edwin

Why would you go to the hobby shop to buy 0% fuel?  It's just methanol and oil!  Just buy methanol at your local race track or speed shop, buy a gallon of oil from Fox or Sig and mix your own!  Its a lot cheaper that way as well.

cording to Rossi, I can run 5%-15%

Maybe in the dead of winter.  I have had luck runing FAI engines with up to 10% in the spring and fall.  5% in the summer, but sometimes even that will detonate on really really hot days.

These engines are set up for FAI fuel and do not gain much other than a little easer to tune with 5% so I would not bother with the expense of any nitro in the fuel for these engines.

I got a gallon of castor oil and I can buy methanol. How would I mix them?

Hi!
You mix them at 80/20! 20% oil and 80% metanol!

The easiest way is to simply add a quart of oil to a gallon of fuel and you'll wind up with 1.25 gallons of glow fuel at about a 20% oil to fuel ratio,

I had one of these awhile back and ran it with 15% cool power and an APC 12x6 prop. Had no shim but had to use a colder Rossi glow plug can't recall if it was the R7 or R8.

So by using an R7 or 8 I can run regular 15% without detonation issues?

I don't get why so many people are dead set on trying to run 15% nitro in European engines designed for little to no nitro.

A cold plug may save you, but it may not. Why not just run 0-5% nitro like most everyone is telling you?

Yes the colder plug changes the engine timing.

"I don't get why so many people are dead set on trying to run 15% nitro in European engines designed for little to no nitro. "

I have several different engines 2 and 4 stroke in various sizes and I only wanted to have a single fuel to run them rather than having to stock multiple grades. It works for me and isn't it all about choice...

My Thunder Tiger Pro .46 runs great on 15%, but it runs great on 5% too with only 400rpm sacrificed. Not enough to warrant the extra cost of the higher nitro fuel.

I too would rather run one fuel type in everything, but sometimes certain engines need special treatment.

My bad on the prop was going for speed and using a 9 or 10 dia APC had it on a sportsman aviation F20 tigershark. Lost the plane when the header came off on takeoff too low and no speed will kill a plane

The header is held on by a spring with a silicone o ring to seal the system. mine came undone, engine quit and it was goodnight Gracie.

Pic of the plane in my gallery.

I keep asking about 15% because its easy and cheap for me to get (my friend owns a hobby store). Methanol is a 45 minute drive and only 5 gallons at a time which would sit there for a while. All of my engines run on 15%.
Thank you all for your help!

Then I would obtain some .1mm head shims. The cold plug will help retard the timing, but I would have shims on hand just in case.

5% glow fuel up here at the LHS is $32/gal, 15% is $36-37/gal. 20% car fuel is $36-40/gal. Hazmat fees suck.

Good luck with your project.

Wow, that's bizarre that you pay more there than we do up here in Canada for the same fuel.

I can vouch for the desire to run one fuel - I have always favoured 15% fuel with syn/cas as my "go to" sport flying fuel, but here we pay about $24 a gallon. Might seem like stubbornness but it does simplify things. I do have to have a bit of other fuel around, like a quart or two for 1/2A's and some blends I make for propped DF engines.

The only shop that carries SIG Champion fuel won't order it in gallons, so to save money I started mixing my own. Some of my engines need an all castor diet. 50/50 oil blend isn't good enough for me. The all castor SIG fuel would be about $2-3 cheaper per gallon in quarts and probably $4-5 in gallons.

I can now make 5% fuel for about $6 a gallon and 20% fuel (RC car) for about $10-12 a gallon.

UPS adds $25 to a 4-gallon case of fuel for hazmat, plus standard shipping at roughly $10. $35/4=$8.75 per gallon just to ship it. If fuel sells for $22-24, add hazmat/shipping and sales tax and you're over $32.
