Status: offline 		The generator is much more convenient for field charging than the marine battery, which itself is another battery to charge.

This seems to be the consensus opinion by a very wide margin. There may be exceptions, but I don't recall seeing a marine battery at all last year at the various events I attended.

I also use the Honda 1kw unit and feel it is perfect for our (pattern) purpose, as is the 2kw unit if you need more capacity for multiple charge stations. Even with the 1kw unit the recharges are so quick (depending on what charger you use) that it can easily serve 2 or 3 pilots all day long.

Status: offline 		The Generator is lighter.  Easier to transport.  Provides unlimited power with only a little gas.   Will last for many many years too. 

A marine battery is very heavy to transport and move.  Provides a limited amount of charging before it must be recharged.  And will only last a few years before needing to be replaced.  Much cheaper though.

Status: offline 		The Honda EU-1000i is very quiet at 56db. To further reduce the sound, many of us place the generator at the front of our vehicles which are backed into the pit area and use an extension cord. The distance and natural sound barrier provided by our vehicles turn the already low noise level into a mere hum. One rule I personally follow is to pack up the generator immediately after I've charged my last battery lest I forget about it and run over it when I leave. Seen it happen and even named the rule after the guy that did it to his (nobody any of you know). BTW, my Honda just completed its 9th flying season and I decided to treat it with its first new spark plug even though it still runs great. I change the oil halfway through each flying season and then again at the end. The spark plug is the first part I ever bought for it.

Status: offline 		This protocol works very well to keep noise to a bare minimum. The addition of a little 3-sided shield would reduce it to almost nil. One of the fields where I fly has very low environmental/human-made sounds (aside from the flying models!) but the sound is so low one forgets that a generator is running.

Expensive? Yes, a bit, but when the convenience and cost amortization over 10 years are taken into account, it is a pretty good deal. I got my 1000-wattter from wisesales.com for around $735USD, which included shipping.

Status: offline 		If cost is the major problem then you can get a two-stroke generator from Harbor freight for 90-130 dollars depending on current sale price that will get the job done. Of course it is not as attractive, noisier, you need to add the oil to your gas and the output is not as well regulated. On the other hand, it is about as light as a Honda and cheaper to replace than repair. Did I say it was noisy?
At the other end of the price spectrum, the Yamaha EF1000is is comparable to the Honda. Get the one with a better sale price.

Best solution is to join a club with electric power.

The Honda Generator is VERY quiet.   It is expensive because it is quiet.  It's a big investment, but I think it is the very best option.

Status: online 		After doing a bunch of research, look at the Yamaha generator's as well. They are just as light, if not lighter than the Honda's and they are actually rated quieter than the Honda's. Both are excellent value's, but after seeing them both, I went with the Yamaha. They aren't any cheaper, but they are just as nice as the Honda.
