I have been digging around a little and looking at all the options for a Panzer III ausf. L
There are so many possible running gear upgrades and electronics packages available, it is hard to know what combination will yield the best results.
I have 3 priorities:
1. Battle ready for Danville (under new TFA -rotated apple- rules)
2. Trouble free running
3. Nice detailing/finishing

This is what I'm thinking so far:
- Start with a HL for upper hull and turret
- Either asiatam or mato lower hull + running gear (leaning towards asiatam as it is tried and true)
- Impact late tracks and drive sprocket
- Tamiya electronics + TBU w/ a futaba 2.4 gHz radio
- Tons of detail parts from asiatam, mato, and tank modelbau

This is where I get lost.

Will an asiatam recoil unit work with tammy electronics?
What about elevation, traverse, and speaker?
Or, if I go with tammy electronics, do I also need to custom fit a tammy recoil, elevation, and traverse units?

I know that there has to be an aftermarket system that works with the TFA rules because the NEAD boys run them.
Buckeye, BennyB, thecommander what do you run?

...or I could just build a tammy Pnzr IV and be done with it.

Any thoughts on any the above stated plans/questions would be appreciated.

ElMod is perfect for the PIII...just my opinion, but I have had plenty of success with mine.

Dave,

PM sent . I just mount the battle apples for my DBC's at 45 degrees to meet specs at Danville and cut the mounting slot so it can be put back to the old set up. As far as I've heard or read the asiatam recoil will burn out the Tami recoil curcuit because of the heavy spring used in it, so you would have to fab up the recoil and elevation. Traverse is easy - use the HL unit and solder the appropriate JST connector on the traverse motor
their available on ebay cheap! I bought 25 for like $12 with shipping. Hope this helps.

Thanks

After reading more about El Mod, I don't think it will work for me.
I am a MAC user, so I won't be able to program it.

I will look more into a DBC.

Has anyone put their hands on a Mato metal hull yet?

Oh and I forgot

I was also thinking of using the Mato 3 to 1 gearboxes and 400 motors.
Has anyone timed this set up before for scale speed?

You don't have to use the programmer on it...also, ElMod has a hand held version that is not reliant on a pc at all...

 Dave,
On my PZ III, it is gutted with exception to the battery box.  Then I used tammy components including tammy recoil. Kept the HL traverse gearbox/turret ring which can be directly wired into
the Tammy orange and white connector. I use a micro servo for elevation that is plugged into a servo speed module so my barrel doesn't look like a windshield wiper when elevating or depressing.  The only down fall on using a servo on only a 4 ch radio is you have to release the stick controlling the servo since the tammy system won't fire while doing said function.  In other words if you hear the sound of the gun elevating or depressing you can't shoot.

you should use the Waltersons gearbox because the extra pinions will get you closer to scale speed than the Mato box.

Dave,

I have asiatam gearboxes in my PzIII with stock motors and it runs 13 seconds in the timed area at Danville, and it's all plastic. My PZIV runs 14 seconds with metal tracks  runs 14 seconds so more weight means she'll run slower. I think Phil told me asiatam gearboxes came with cheap 380 motors.  Freakydude might be right about using the Walterson gearboxes since the have adjustable pinions. The asiatam pinion is 18 or 19 tooth so the extra pinions would help up the speed.

Beware of using the DBCRC2 and the asiatam recoil as I could never get mine to work right. It always had the infamous glitch where it would revert back to stock HL specs ( the infamous HL rock when firing) and would shut down when you would try to drive the tank. Phil and I worked on this for over a year and never found a solution. Personally I think stock HL electronics , the DBC, the hobby grade receiver ( spektrum) and the asiatam recoil was just too much draw and caused brown outs. I have talked to other people and with the HL radio/DBC/asiatam recoil they didn't have this issue. Just food for thought, Nothing worse than a gorgeous model that doesn't work-trust me I know. I eventually went to servo recoil with my DBCRC2 equipped tanks. I don't know if YHR can supply DBC3 with the connections for servos though , Dan maybe you can chime in? I also know of Dan's battery mod For the DBC glitch but one runs out of room in the PzIII/IV in a hurry. Their tiny inside even compared to a Sherman or T-34

My Stug has an Asiatam lower hull, asiatam 3:1 gearboxes with 400 motors, Impact early tracks and sprockets.
I run an ElMod Eco board with stock HL recoil and elevation (cheap and trouble free).
I made a Tamiya style shade for my apple and mounted the socket at a 45, works TFA.
The electronics are dialed in to spec speeds, the tank runs great and gives me zero issues.

I run Mato 3:1s in an Asiatam lower hull, & SLU. It's my best battler, best climber, and almost my fastest. Mato metal sprockets & tracks, very tough on a Panzer3 and reliable.

I can climb out of a vertical ditch thats nearly as tall as the tank, this thing eats hills.

Thanks again guys for all the input.

I guess I am leaning towards gutting a HL and running tammy electronics.
Mostly because it is what I am most familiar with.

I tend to be indecisive when it comes to big purchases.
I went to a battle day at the AAF Museum before I owned a tank, and asked the HEAT guys like 900 questions.

BennyB - would a 6 channel radio solve the servo problem?
Also what gearboxes/motors/pinions did you use?
What DMD and MF units did you use?
Pnzr IV?

Dave, yes a 6ch radio will solve the firing while elevating issue.  You could try and contact James N. on how to set that up.
I'm using Tiger 1 Tammy electronics just cause I did my conversion years ago and it was that or sherman or pershing DMD/MF's.
I have the older 3:1 black steel HL gearboxes with 6v speed 400 motors.  I haven't done a speed test in a while, but believe it's a bit
fast.  Easy fix by just putting on a smaller pinion.  Think I'm using 9 or 10 tooth pinions.
