18" Goldberg Shoestring sheet balsa free flight from the 1950s, but it's a clone from Paul Bradley's great website. AR6400 brick gear and motor from the Ultra Micro Mustang, weight 1.3 ounces with 150 mah battery. Great flyer like all Goldberg models. Pictured with it's big brother to show 45 years of R/C progress!

Check out Paul's website, tons of those TF Jigtime, Goldberg, ect. sheet balsa models from the 50s/60s. I did the Goldberg Cessna 180 first.

Great little plane and link, have to build one but can anyone suggest an alternative motor
if possible available here in UK. Thanks John

Hi Proctor! Here's a link to a supplier in the UK that has the required parts I used. UM Mustang Ar6400, motor/gear box/prop/spinner and 150 mah battery. I used the same combo in the Cessna 180 and it worked well in both. Russ Farris

Thanks, Gene that's a very kind thing to say. I hope we can fly our Skylark 56 twins together at the Glory Days meet next year! Russ Farris

Thanks Russ for the Wheelspin link, picked up the transfer paper today and looking forward to building one
of these little rascals. Mostly I build small free flight models for 0.25 to 0.5cc diesels but these will make a
nice diversion. Thanks again John

Proctor - good luck with the build, these little sheet balsa jobs are great flyers! Post some pictures when you get it finished. Russ Farris

And here is the Goldberg Cessna 180 from 1957, my first successful flying model (it flew about 10 seconds I was thrilled)! Now 40 years later here's my R/C conversion. Flies great on calm days and indoors. Both models have about a 7 to 8 minute duration and look great in the air. Russ Farris

Hi Russ,
Neat planes.
Is the motor you use the same as the GWS IPS units? What do they weigh with gear boxes?
I assume you fly til the battery goes dead. How does this affect battery life?
I have a little Scientific Shoestring with a Cox Pee Wee engine and am thinking of converting it to electric.
Thanks,
Bob

Hi Bob! I remember meeting you at Muncie back in what, 2008?

I had to look up the specs on the Scientific Shoestring; I had forgotten all about it. The motor/gearbox and radio I've used on the CG models is right out of the Parkzone UltraMicro ARFs and would only work for a model up to a max of around 2.0 ounces! My Shoestring and 180 come in at 1.3 ounces with battery. Your Shoestring, which I'm guessing without engine and radio is probably 6-7 ounces??? a great candidate for a small brushless Outrunner and micro 2.4 RX and servos such as the Hitec HS-55. If you are interested in going this route I can suggest a motor/battery/esc combo if you aren't that familiar with electrics. And it would be lighter than the original.

Shoestrings are great looking and flying models, at any size!

Hi Russ,

A friend came up with an electronic simulator that runs a brushless motor for about 2 minutes then shuts down which is fine with me.
This will simulate my Cox Pee Wee.
That way I can use my old Ace pulse radio with Adams actuator.

If you have any suggestions for a brushless motor I am all ears.

Thanks,
Bob
