When I do my tax returns, I was thinking I might get a new TV. I have right now a 42" Samsung plasma, but on certain channels, I see lines at the top of the screen, almost like the plasma is going. But like I said, it is only on certain channels, and if you move the picture up, the line goes away. I got a good deal on this tv ($400). I'm looking for a good brand, great picture and sound. I game with 1080p and an HDMI cable on the PS3, and watch tv too, so picture quality is a must, as well as sound because I don't want to hook up a theatre. The thing is, I don't know the difference in LED and LCD. I would rather not buy another plasma. They seem touchy. Looking for something around $700 for 50" give or take a few inches. I definitely want to go bigger than my 42" that I have now. Thanks guys, all inputs are appreciated.

Thanks for tellling me about the PLASMA TV's. I'll try to stay away from them.
I used a 24" 720p LCD for a while maybe 2 years and it still works. I now have a 39" RCA 1080p TV. 4 HDMI inputs...for games etc..

I tell ya right now LED is better quality than LCD. But it's unknown if they last longer than LCD or not.

When you start going 50 and up Plasma starts to shine. I have this one and I love it. Panasonic makes the best plasma screens. My parent's house is nothing but Panasonic plasmas and they have been going for years w/o issue.

LED is the best option for picture. But only slightly better than LCD. I think you would really only notice the difference if you are comparing the two side by side but LED is still the best. the biggest factorto picture quality is hz. most of the budget models are only 60 hz. Once you get into larger screen sizes you need to have a minimum of 120hz and 240hz would be much better.

It was said the Plasma wont last as long as LCD/LED but tech has since improved so they should all have something like 60,000 hours of life. We have a Vizio (bought used) and its been great with my 360 but Ive also used it on a smaller plasma and it looked killer on that also.

My old LCD Samsung (from nearly 2007) still runs strong. Samsung makes things that last. The only thing i needed to fix was a busted capacitor on the power board 2 years ago. Get an LCD tv. They go forever. Plasma has a glare and LED is a waste of money.

Im with darkfire on this. Panasonic makes great TVs for comparable prices, all my TVs are pannys. Plasma can do things the others never could. First of all for the gamers you cant beat the 600hz refresh rate, the best others can do is max 240 I think? And you;ll pay extra for that option. Plus anLED with 120hz gives a "soap opera" look to any image with a white washout, The 42" samsung i bought had this, i returned it for a panasonic.. Plasma is the only one to offer true black, other tv's will have a dark grey at best which you can see when watching movies in the dark for example. Yes plasma tv's are thick and generate more heat bit IMO small price to pay the image quality and refresh rate.

Benefit with plasma I guess is since they are pretty old technology, they are crazy cheap.

But recommending a plasma over LED for gaming, you may as well recommend old CRT tubes since those have no input delay. Since most (all?) consoles run at 30 frames per second a 600hz refresh rate is not needed.

Also with Plasma since they have been around forever, they are getting better. As in they have gotten lighter(a bit), more energy efficient, and they don't put as much heat off.

WORD OF WARNING THOUGH. If you have a lot of light in the room you are putting it in, IE windows. They could glare quite badly.

You can still buy them new online. I just looked. Although a 60 inch plasma was nearly 6000 dollars, it probably was great quality.

I guess we have reached a verdict. Plasma was before LCD (Liquid crystal display), LED (I have no clue what it stands for)
is supposed to be better than LCD or Plasma. I personally like LCD TV's been using them for a long time.

LED is at least 50% better than LCD, if they are side by side you can see the difference at Target or most
department stores. 39" is big enough for me, if I go to a bigger screen I have to get a bigger TV stand
or hang it on the wall and I dont really wanna do that.

Plasma are where its at if you don't mind replacing them regularly, they deteriorate quickly, but an expensive plasma has colour fidelity like no other.

I've never heard that they don't last very long. I sold my old Plasma to a buddy of mine and it's still going strong after nine or ten years (can't remember exactly off the top of my head), granted it's a Pioneer but it's still the same technology as the cheaper stuff. I agree they can't be beaten in the picture department. IMO LCD is only really good for hanging on walls due to the fact they are lighter.

TKK, you might be surprised if you could put your old TV next to a brand new identical one, I expect you would be able to tell the difference. The colours flatten slowly over years, panasonic are good tvs though, no doubt it will be one of the longer lasting ones, but really its the nature of the technology.

LED TV's are LCD's with LED backlighting. They are why LCD's are as so thin now and save lots of power. They should last a while before burning out too.

So what would my best option be considering my preferences and what I do with it? I play the PS3 in 1080p HD, watch HDTV a lot, movies. Something 50" or greater. Somethign with decent sound too. For under hopefully $800.
