Does anyone know what the unusual manifold is on the side of the 3W 55 engine? Looks to be a tuned intake charge system ahead of the reed valve but I'm not sure. Sexy for sure. Thanks!

Unusual? Just some packaging engineering due to reed intake space requirements.

I agree with Pe, just what was necessary to keep the carb close to the side of the engine a side intake, reed valve configuration.

Not unlike what Quadra did 20+ years ago with the Q 65, 75 and 100 series engines.

i am no engine designer, but the fuel charge goes straight into the crankcase.no obstruction like a rear charge engine with the crankshaft counter weight slowing down the fuel?

I'm not sure there is much difference either way. With the side reed arrangement, the intake charge pretty much goes straight into the side of the rotating crank counterweights. Note, that is counterweights (plural) as most side intake engines use a rear crank bearing with two counterweights. I like the arrangement for the most part but the rear intake engines seem to dominate these days. Great combination for warbirds and other short nose airplanes.

Thanks for the replies. Most side mounted carbs that I have seen are more of a simple piston port setup, with or without the reed block. So it looks a bit unusual to me anyway. At first glance all I could think of was the YS type supercharging system but of course that is not the case here.

The piston ported side intake with reeds offers advantages that 3W did not use in this case. This is a pure reed intake on the engine crankcase.

The old McColluch chain saw / go kart engines used a manifold similar to this. Inside the manifold the fuel charge was exposed to a pure reed valve AND some small piston ports along side the reed valve block. Have you seen another one like that?

Yes, the Husky GP-MX engines had reed supported piston porting AND a direct boost port from behind the reeds into the cylinder to take advantage of suction waves inside the cylinder. The piston looked like a swiss cheese.

I assume the direct boost port only opened at TDC?

No, wrong assumption. At TDC there is no low pressure in the cylinder.
It is described in detail in Jennings's publications.

My observations are that the boost ports have the same timing as the main transfers.

You don't see a boost port on a piston ported engine unless someone has added finger ports over to that area from the main transfers,

We used them on our Kreidler racers.  A finger port, matching with piston port, starting one mm above the intake duct
Some Kreidler tuners nowadays also use the ports you describe. even combined with the port we used.
Here is a picture. Two finger ports above the intake duct, one vacuum port entering from the intake duct into the main transfers (not too sure about that).
I get internal server error when uploading, so I placed the images on my own server. Also, I can place only one link????? Power2 does not work.

I have to try something else

Oh boost port, not piston port, of course would open at BTC. Thanks.
