Hi all, I've been building airplanes for over 30 years and have been getting reaccuring bad reactions using zap glue, from
intense itching in my spine to running sinus, to bad coughing spells. The symptoms only come after working in the shop
using the glue.
Now I'm not looking to blame anyone or sue anyone. I JUST want to find an alternative that I can live with.
I even wear a paint respirator when I build.
It may not even be the glue, maybe I'm getting allergic to balsa dust. LOL, sure hope not.
Anyways has anyone else ever had these problems and can you suggest another fast set glue to use, other than epoxy.
I'm ready to try anything..

Thanks for your help, Mike.

Are you using the commercial  "kicker" ? Some folks have reactions to that.

I have the same problem. This might not work in your case, but when I need to use CA I get my loving wife to do it for me. It only cost me dinner out someplace.

I use a pedestal fan on low speed that helps, also vacuum often when sanding.

I started getting reactions after using CA for several years. Just MHO, but I believe the sensitivity is cumulative, i.e., once you pass a certain exposure threshold, your reactions will occur more quickly and with greater intensity. That's how my reactions are now. I only use CA when tacking parts, only as needed. YMMV of course.

I had this problem too, switched to odorless and it went away. And you can use it on foam, too. As you say, though, it could be other things that you are reacting to.

Hello Mike,

When CA cures (dry) most of it turns into vapor in the surrounding.
We can see that by dropping a big drop on a clean metal surface that does not absorb it and notice the volume left when hardened. There is not much left to bind things together and provide a good binding area.

Using CA for tacking only and a fan to provide you with fresh air when having to tack is a good idea as mentioned and which I use.

Allergy to sanding dust from balsa or any wood is unlikly.
Balsa is nearly all cellulose and quite neutral. Humans are not known to react to cellulose exposure.

Following the comments written by others in this thread will avoid any allergic reactions.

Use some aliphatic glue or glue like SigMent, Titebond, Weldbond or plain woodworkers' glue.

Enjoy building in a safe atmosphere.

Zor

Thanks for all the replies, I thought there might be a problem that would be common.

I always vacuum when sanding. Don't really think that is the problem.

I will try the odorless, actually didn't know they had an odorless.

I also have a large air filtration unit hanging from ceiling that circulates the air in the whole room many times per hour.

I don't use the kicker.

Loved the wife idea but my wife said NO way. Oh we'll.

I think my symptoms are cumulative as they seem to be getting worse.

Just going to have to start using other glue, but I love the speed that Zap allows me to build.

Thanks again

I am fairly convinced that once you are having troubles with this (I do also) the WORST thing is breathing balsa dust you make when you sand wood that has the ca glue in it. I use odorless without trouble, but I try to use white glues everywhere .. I still use epoxies when needed.

the other night I sanded on an old abandoned project I picked up.. it had been built with ca glue, after 30 minutes my breathing just locked up, I had to literally force my lungs to inhale and exhale.... it got to me so badly ...be careful and use a mask when you need to..

I don't have asthma or any other lung issues, needless to say I was worried for awhile..

Hey food stick, sorry to hear about your problem with zap. I am not that bad.

The CA reaction hit me like I had a cold. My nose gets plugged up and I can't clear it. I have used other glues but still use more CA then anything. The orderless helps out a lot but can still get you. During the summer I build a lot more and open the door and window, make sure I'm not right over my work and breathing it. That helps a bunch. When I'm sheeting though I use a lot of it and even my wife notices it when I have a problem. If I stay out of the shop for a couple days it clears up. I have never had any body pain from CA though. I also had the same exact reaction when I had an air tight wood stove, it took years using it but I kept thinking I was having a CA reaction but when I went out hunting all day my nose cleared up, soon as I walked into the house it plugged up again. Bought a humidifier and I was cured. I get no reaction from epoxy at all.

I use a huge fan to keep the air moving when I use CA and I have gone back to the early days of plane building, wood glue. I have discoverd Titebond works real well and for $3.50 I can get a huge bottle of it from the Home Depot. I did have to buy some more clamps, but I am not sneezing my brains loose and my Kleenex bill went down as my eyes do not water up any more. Good Luck, Dave

Not true!  My cousin was a cabinet maker as long as I can remember, and he is now allergic to any kind of saw dust, or sanding dust. If he goes into a room that has it, he get just like someone allergic to a cat, instantly, and keeps getting worst till he gets outside to fresh air.

Some people have an allergy to most anything.  They are most likely members of that group that break out in hives whenever a jet passes over at 36,000 feet with contrails.  How dare the government poison us like that.!  (DUH)  My day wouldn't start off right without a good snort of CA and a fresh jalapeno.  Where did I put those damned AAA  rounds again?

Spirit, I use an exhaust fan going full bore that is attached to an open window and a box fan on the floor blowing in to it. I am working in the middle of the two with the glues. It gets a little chilly at times but it sure takes away the fumes. Dan.

You are correct Pat.
My post is referring to the general public.

Note that you mention your cousin and excludes yourself.
Your cousin is a rare exception having been exposed for years.
As you wrote "a cabinet maker as long as you can remember".

That can hardly justify that what I wrote is "Not true! ".

All Day Dan _ _ _ and all readers,

Exactly the same set up as I use.

I also use aircraft dope doing some brushed on doping finish on the fabric covered structure of my models.
I can do that even in the middle of winter working at normal indoor temperatures.

When there is a will there is a way  .

It works fine without any objectionable smell in the house.
Open window(s) to bring in fresh air from the opposite side of the house.

A single fan or blower will distribute the nocif vapors in the rest of the room and do some degree of relieving the work area but what is really needed is ventilaton.

Send the nocif vapors out to the outside while replacing the atmosphere in the work area with fresh air.

Please read the nearby postings.

The problem probably is the chemical nature of ethyl cyanoacrylate.  A lot of people get sensitized using it and some can develop strong allergic reactions to it.  The best advise is to use an Odor Free CA.  Odor Free CAs are chemically different in that they are butyl CAs. Consequently, most people who have developed a sensitivity to regular CAs can use the Odor Free products without any problems at all.   They are more expensive and have about half the shelf life of of a regular CA. Unfortunately almost all odorless CAs are made overseas and can spend at least half their shelf life just in transit from China to the US.  Check out the Odor Free CA products on www.redbaronadhesives.com website.  All Red Baron products are Made in the USA and have the date of manufacture printed on the bottom of each bottle.  Red Baron Odor Free CAs have over 2 tons of bonding strength and only take a few seconds longer to bond the our regular CAs.  Very soon they will be available at your favorite hobby shop.  Check them out and if you have any questions at all, shoot me an email at dave@redbaronadhesives.com and I will be happy to answer any questions you might have.
