Status: offline 		Working on the finishing touches of a Great Planes Extra 330L. It is tail heavy so i need to get the equipment as far forward as possible. Will there be any bad effects if the smoke pump is mounted near the ignition module as shown in the picture? Thank you.

Status: online 		If any of the leads are connected to the receiver, you risk the probability of conducting radio frequency interference (RFI) from the ignition module right in to the receiver. That pump looks light enough to locate it away from any RFI with little effect on the weight distribution. Dan.

Status: offline 		Thanks Dan, i was afraid that might be the case. The pump is not real heavy but it does weigh 4.5 ounces so it can a bit of a difference. I will look for another place and still try to keep it forward of the CG.

How long do we have to play this game about RF?

IF you're still running 72MHz then there are a few considerations you MUST observe but this old bunk about not locating anything within 12 inches isn't one of them. Take for example the throttle servos which are located on or in the engine box and those work fine even on 72MHz setups.

If you're running 2.4GHz, it's pretty much immune to any type of interference from the engine/module except one thing and that is loose sparks intended for the sparkplug. If you have the wrong sparkplug like a non-resistor when the system requires one, chaffed sparkplug wire, cracked ceramic or the most common problem; the cap isn't seated properly on the sparkplug then you'll most likely have problems. None of the radio systems like a loose 20,000 or so volts wandering around.

Observing the no metal to metal contact rule on control rods isn't a bad idea and I use ball links on my throttle linkages anyway.

Put your smoke pump where you have it and just do a thorough range check.....

Status: online 		The "distance rule" came about and still applies to magneto ignition engines. It is not neccessary with electronic shielded ignitions. I fly 2.4. My mag fired planes utilize the distance rule, my electronic ignition planes do not.

Why don't you tell the OP he needs Ferrite rings on the servo leads and twisted servo leads while you're at it????? lol

Here's an H9 Edge with the throttle servo, choke servo, ignition module and ignition battery all on the engine box and that's the way it came from Horizon. It was initially setup on 72MHz and worked fine, it still works fine on 2.4GHz.

This is only one of my models which "violate" the 12" rule....

Hmmm.... well this stupid website won't let me upload pics which happens WAY to frequently with the current owners and IT staff here.....

I MAY try to add the pics another time, OR maybe it's an OMEN????? lol

HA!!!! got 'em......

Oh bye the way, the ignition battery was eventually moved back inside the fuselage to just in front of the rx for balance purposes, the two rx batteries are both just behind the rx and it all still works.
