Status: offline 		I have a 3.7 sachs with electronic ignition on it...it runs but i want to change the ignition box on it and all my other will not fire the engine...is the pickups on some engines different then others???? what am i missing?????

Status: online 		Yeah there are some differences in which hall effect sensor they could be using. Also some engines used a optical sensor and not a hall effect sensor which uses a magnet. There were a few early engines that used a magnet and a fine wire coil as the sensor too. As the magnet went by the coil, it generated a electrical pulse which the electronic ignition unit used.
 
  Now then for the hall effect sensors, there are four main types, one looks for a South pole magnet signal, one looks for a North pole magnet signal, one can work with both North and South poles and there is what they call a gear tooth sensor that can pickup the individual gear teeth on a gear (this is the classic engine position sensor in cars).

If you change out the ignition module, it is a good idea to swap out the sensor for the one the ignition module uses too. But if the new ignition module is the same brand as the old one, then there is a good chance it will use the same sensor though.

Even with Hall sensors it is a good idea to use the sensor that goes with the ignition.

BTW,  a gear tooth sensor is called a proximity sensor ;-)

Status: online 		Most of the Sack's conversions used a hall effect sensor, There should be a small deans connector on the sensor wire.

What brand ignition were you trying to use on it.

Status: offline 		Well it came with a Air Hobbies twin ignition box that someone has cut off one lead and put silicone in the hole...it has a plug cap for the cm6 plug not the regular size that this engine takes and the engine has a JR lead off of the sensor Not a deans

Thanks, but it sort of depends on who makes them and which country they are from. They tend to call the Gear Tooth sensors over here.
ref http://www.melexis.com/Assets/Hall-Effect-Geartooth-Sensor3721.aspx  Unfortunately the Forum website software is trashing the URL, it is correct and when I post it the website trashes the URL causing it to not work.  Melexis calls it a hall effect gear tooth sensor.
But they are sometimes referred to as Speed sensors and as you stated a Proximity sensor too. They also use a Cam Sensor which works the same way too.

Status: offline 		So is there anyway to tell which one i have voltmeter maybe,or do i have to take it out???? this engine has a big piece of alumin. on the front for a crank adaptor and i am not sure how it comes off.... it may be two pieces????

Status: online 		Yes, A lot of the earlier conversion did not have a key way cut in them, You just have to know how to set the hub to make sure it is timed right.

The key is only for aliment and does not do anything for holding the hub in place.

Status: offline 		i can see witness marks on the inside so it should not be hard to reinstall....so now do i need to replace both the pickup and ing. box or does the magnet have to be replaced also???

Status: online 		Check the magnet with something metal and see how strong it is, you had said the engine would run with old ignition so magnet should be OK.

It would be best to replace the sensor with the ignition, just have to make sure you get the polarity on the sensor right.
