I am considering the purchase of an XYZ 20cc engine. I have never seen one. Would appreciate comments and opinions from anyone who has used the XYZ engine.
Best Regards JC

I had one.

The 8mm crankshaft threads were much larger than 8mm. Never did find out what it was.
The mounting holes were not arranged like a rectangle. I had to match drill the holes in the firewall. Never could figure out if the prop was in the center.
The spark plug was the taper type but the cylinder head had no taper in it.
The arm on the throttle plate was the original one. From full open to full closed was 1/8 inch.
Never could get it to idle.
It turned a Zinger 16X8 at 7400. I needed more.

The guy I bought it from would not guarantee that another one would be interchangeable with this one. I needed two for a twin model. He took it back and sent me a check.

It's the old story. You get what you pay for. Dan.

Just out of curiousity, why are you thinking about buying the XYZ20 without having seen one when the Net and in particular this forum is full of questionable feedback on the XYZ brand but people are giving the DLE20 glowing reports?

They were discussing the engine earlier in this thread here http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_10944746/anchors_10950749/mpage_1/key_/anchor/tm.htm#10950749
and also in this thread here too http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_11251231/anchors_11251231/mpage_1/key_/anchor/tm.htm#11251231

The Valley View RC version should come with a RCexl CDI module and a NGK spark plug, longer throttle and choke arms and a fiber filled beam motor mount.  Others may come with the XYZ cdi module and a unknown brand spark plug and OEM short throttle and choke arms and no motor mount.

If you are buying the Valley View version it should be okay as they do warranty what they sell, and just in case you need it they provide excellent customer service.

I have a XYZ20 from VV. Mine is in a Seagull Yak.

From what I understand, Tom Denny of Valley View RC has had input to the manufacturer to meet his requirements for this engine. That being the case, it is a somewhat different engine than what XYZ used to produce.

My observations on this engine. It started quite easily the first time and ever since. The engine is run at VV before being sent to the buyer. I did not need to do any needle adjustments for the first couple of flights. I did lean the high end slightly after an hour of run time.

I believe it has a real Walbro carb, a WT793A. One thing I did not like about the carb was that the choke will not stay fully closed after it has been set there. Vibration from flipping the prop or using an electric starter would cause the choke to start coming open.

The only other complaint I have is that the threads on the crank shaft is an uncommon 8mmx.075. I haven't found anyone who makes spinner adaptors such as TruTurn or Dave Brown Products that has a .075 thread size. I spoke to Tom Denny and he said he will have them redo the threads to the more common 8mm x 1.00 in the future. In the mean time VV has a supply of prop nuts and spinner adaptor nuts that one can get if a replacement should be needed.

I don't think my engine is fully broken in yet so I do expect a bit more power in another hour or two of running it.

One nice thing I like over the DLE20 is that the XYZ engine comes with a standard RCEXL ignition rather than the #4 ignition that the DLE20 has. The XYZ doesn't have the idling issue that the #4 module causes.

Overall I'm pleased with it so far. For the price, it's a pretty good deal. Time will tell as to its reliability.

Mike

I'm planning on buying one from VV this month; they have a Christmas sale going right now It's either gonna go into a Seagull 1.20 size Decathlon or a profile plane; haven't decided which...maybe I need 2!

Just ordered another one of these engines. That makes 4 for me. VV is having a sale on them at 179.99 plus another 10% off till the 31st. I can find zero fault with these engines.

If you're still trying to make up your mind, have had both. Decathlon was nice, drew a lot of attention for it's appearance, but didn't fly worth a darn in my opinion. Flew around scale like fine, but anything that pushed it, too heavy, unbelievable KE coupling! The profile on the other hand, is HUGE fun to fly even if you're as 3D clueless as I am!

A friend bought the VV version recently. Between us we have 3 DLE 20s. The VV 20cc surprised the heck out of me. It throttles perfectly! No burbles, no stumble of any kind going up/down. The power is a little less than the DLE. The sound is pleasant compared to the DLE's whine. If I am shopping for a 20cc gasser right now I would buy the VV version.

I have the Seagull SD. I agree with Ahicks. OK for scale flying, but heavy. I have a CRRC 26 with pitts style muffler in it and still had to put the battery in the windshield to balance it. Also not much room to install the igniton and battery. Ended up cutting into the "chin area" to install the ign. bat. Really have to watch the rudder on starting to the takeoff roll. Not a boring airplane to fly!!

Tom is the best at VV. I needed a profile muffler for it and he thew that in instead of the stock muffler. A steal at $179 but that price is bound to go up. He said he ran one at WOT on the bench. Went to lunch and came back much later with it still screaming happily away.
