I actually managed (somewhat successfully) to solder on a dean's plug BACKWARDS. Not the + to the - sort of backwards. I mean I soldered the connecting wires to female side of the plug! Seriously, there should be a poster with my face in every hobby shop saying: Do not under any circumstances sell this man electronics!

And in removing it and resoldering it, I destroyed the alignment of the female side of the plug. It will take me at least a week to get a replacement. What prompted this bit of dopiness is that today I received my 3.7V LiPo from Hobby King. It included the connector wires with banana plugs on one end to go into the battery I figured that much out. The other ends were pre-tinned ready to solder onto the dean's connector. But somehow I got confused about which end plugged into which way into the glow system.

I thought this was the only thing standing between me and the test of the glow system and Seidel 770. But it seems the gulf of my stupidity is still in the way.

I also have no idea how to charge the battery. I really am hopeless.

Buy from some vendors and you get what you get. Buy from a reputable vendor and you get a complete working system with instructions. What is one week of your life worth in dollars or yen?

You're so right. I should have just bought a battery with a dean's connector already attached. The battery charger I have is consider a good one (Hyperion EOS0606i) but the instructions are useless unless you already know what everything means. The instructions for the Microsens glow system are reasonable (after you read them a couple of times).

But I suspect most of the problem lies with my fear of electronics.

How many Bud Lights were involved? May have been too many, or not enough. I've seen both situations!

I refuse to be defeated by a charger and a $20 buck battery!

I found the proper charging harness wires that came with the Hyperion charger and cut off the alligator clips I had been using on some 2V lead batteries (both of which died almost immediately) and then soldered on some gold connector banana plugs. So there are now banana plugs on both ends. One +/- set plugs into the side of the charger and the other +/- set plugs into the top of the "hard pack" LiPo that I'll use on my test stand setup. The battery is a Turnegy LiPo Nano-teh 5.0 5000mAh 3.7V (single cell). Model #: NC5000.1S2P.50. I don't have any idea what that "2P" or the "50" in the model number stands for.

After reading the manual carefully (RTFM) I think I've got it set up to change this battery. But I don't have any idea how long it will take to charge and since the instructions say again and again not to charge the battery unattended, I think I'll wait before I start. Usually I like to charge my NiCD batteries overnight. This is the first LiPo battery I've ever had.

Note: Just how much of a fire hazard do the latest generation of LiPos pose?

The number 2P means your pack actually has 2 cells in parallel. The number 50 most likely is the C rating.

I'm not familiar with that charger, but the information on the screen in your pic looks correct. I don't see a balance connector in the pic. You really need to have this in addition to the main leads so the cells can be balanced. Charging using only the main power leads gives no way for the cells to be balanced and charged independently. You can probably get away with one or two charge cycles with out balancing, but any more than that could lead to damage or failure if you don't balance the cells periodically.

Hmmm...then what does the 1S mean? I took this to mean that it has 1 cell. Or does this mean that it has two cells, as you say, in parallel so that the voltage stays at 3.7 but the mAh (storage capacity) is higher. Would this mean that each cell is 2500mAh? In which case we're back to "what does 1S" means and should the charger be set to 1S or 2S?

Also the charger instructions make a big deal about using the "balancer" feature for charging LiPos but this battery doesn't have any connection for doing that.

-The 1S2P means you have 2 cells in parallel, and the equivalent of 1 cell in series (3.7v, nominal voltage). Since the pack has a 5000mAh rating, I'm assuming that each cell is 2500mAh. Because the two cells are wired in parallel, you can't balance them individually without disconnecting them from each other. The 50 could be a C rating. Two 25C cells wired in parallel could give you a 50C rating.
-Just a suggestion, I put my batteries in a LiPo sack (a fire safe pouch) when I charge them...just in case. I've never had one burn in over 10 years, but some of my friends have.

The 1S means you have one cell in series and the 2P means you two parallel circuits (in your case, only one cell in each circuit.  So your pack is a 1S 2P, and you are correct that it is still 3.7 volts and each cell is 2500 mah, which add together to make 5000mah.
When wired in parallel, the mah of each cell are added and voltage is not. When cells are wired in series, the voltages are added but the mah are not.
If your pack was wired in series, it would be a 2S 1P, and would be 7.4 volts and only 2500mah.

I use mainly three cell 11.1 volt , 2200mah packs which are 3S 1P.  I could combine two of these packs in parallel and have a 3S 2P, 4400mah, 11.1 volt pack, or I could combine them in series and have a 6S 1P 2200 mah, 22.2 volt pack.

Hope this helps!

Thanks, guys for all the sympatico explanations. This battery will be used to run the on-board glow system for my 7-cylinder Seidel/UMS.

The C rating listed on the pack is the rate the pack can be discharged safely. Don't be too concerned with that just yet. The main thing you need to know is that you should charge at 1C, in your case that would be 5amps. The charger should be set for 1S. My charger will automatically detect multiple cells in parallel thru the balance connector. Yours probably would also, but I'm not certain since I don't have that charger. You wont know if you don't connect a balance lead because the charger cannot detect multiple cells using only the main power leads of the battery.

Thanks. According to the instructions, for LiPo batteries, the charge rate (A on the display) defaults to 1C (more electronics gobbledee-gook) but I guess that it's basically relative to the mAh. For example, on this 5000mAh pack it defaults to 5A. It says not to mess with this unless you are an "advanced user."

As for balancing, the battery only has two connection points for the + and - wires. There is a balancer port on the side of the charger and I have a set of multi-pin adapters that plug into that, but there isn't any third connector on the battery to attach to it.

How long should it take to fully change this battery? Do new batteries usually ship charged or uncharged?

Abu. Welcome to the Wonderful????? world of electrics. Just think, you could also have to be dealing with motors/vs/props/vs batteries etc.,etc., etc.:-))))))))

Li-Po batteries should not be stored fully charged like other types of batteries, otherwise they will swell up. I know this from experience. There are some other posts about how to prepare them for storage. Check there for the procedure. I've never seen a hard cased LiPo before. All of the ones that I have from Hobby King are "naked" so to speak and they have a balance plug. In your case that plug should be white and have 3 wires going to it.

I saw that the charger as a STORE setting for LiPos. It says never to store a fully charged LiPo for more than a week and never to fully discharge one. If fact, it suggests never using the discharge function with LiPos unless there is some "compelling" reason. The STORE function either charges or discharges the battery to approximately 60%.

As I said, there is no balance plug.

Les, if it ever came down to a choice I'd choose rubber-powered free-flight over electric!

Don't feel bad; I almost soldered like you did. Got the wrong side of the Dean's fluxed and started to tin with solder before I realized my mistake...

Batteries are usuall shipped at "storage" voltage, meaning approximately 3.8V per cell, and probably about 50% capacity. At a 1C rate, yours should theoretically take about half an hour to charge

Here are the balancing connector adapters that I bought at the same time as the charger. Not quit sure how these all go together or what all the plugs are for, but there's no way to plug my battery into any of this (as seen in the diagram).

Since your battery is just one cell, there is no need for a balancing tap(3rd wire) on the battery, nor will you have to set the charger to balance. I would set it for a 1S (3.7V) "fast charge" or similar setting. Most chargers have different settings for charging, such as balance, storage, fast charge, etc. No balancing required on your battery...

So do two cells (1S2P = 2 x 2500mAh) count as one cell in terms of balancing?
