Gents... The monokote keeps peeling off the bottom on my wings...

I have a recently rebuilt Zen 120 pattern ship and the covering on the bottom of the wing peels off every flight behind the retracts.. that area has a very thin fiberglass covering over the wing sheeting.. I've used acetone, sanding, lots of hot iron, etc...

any ideas would be greatly appreciated...

How smooth is the finish on the fiberglass? If the weave is still at the surface, you probably don't have much actual adhesion area at all for the monokote to stick to. If you did fill the weave completely, hitting it with some 100 grit sandpaper and thoroughly cleaning the sanding dust should give it enough roughness to stick to.

Clear finger nail polish along the edges.

under the monokote? or as an adhesive at the edge of the monokote?

Do you rub down the cote after you apply the iron? Use a soft cloth with plenty of cushion and rub while the cote is cooling.

I've never went that extra bit and rubbed the surface with a padded cloth... at $15 a roll, I'm willing to whisper sweet-nothings at the wing as well if it will help!!! lol

thanks

Often times when I'm applying any of the plastic films over a glassed area, I'll put a coating of Balsarite on just that area. especially if it is on an open end like what you have described. Then after go with the clear fingernail polish just on the very end of the covering.

The Balsarite will do the trick. Then CA or clear fingernail polish will be extra security.

For ARF's or situations where you cannot apply Balsarite on bare wood, I've resorted to applying Top Flight clear coat spray on top of the covering.

I first lightly buff the covering with a plastic dish sponge to get out debris, etc.

They I apply very light coats of Top Flight clear coat.

This seals all of the edges and prevents fuel from penetrating. Much easier than CA and it lasts.

Caveat:

While I've had extremely good results with most coverings, I've also had the Top Flight come off or wear off when exposed to glow fuel. This seems more related to the actual covering material used.

In some cases I've used Top Flight on "Chinacoat" ( Cheap Chinese covered ARFs ) and have NEVER had anything come off or peal after repeated exposures to fuels.
On one or two cases, the clear coat seems to wear or become thinner over time. Dunno why.

More issues... This is an ARF and has a very shallow (i don't know how to describe it) layer of what I thought was fiber glass out to about the 1/4 of the wing... so... if the wingspan in about 75 inches, the middle 30 inches is "hardened". like its been covered in some kind of epoxy/glue.

I used acetone to really clean the area... waited until it dried... measured the Monokote, used a hot iron (hobbico) set at temp 3, it has a sock... tacked the corners first and slowly went around the periphery of the patch... the overlap on the existing Monokote seal and look great but the covering pulls easily from any wood only edges...

I then tried Balsarite.. cleaned the surface, spread the Balsarite, waited until it dried.. sanded it lightly with 220 sand paper... applied new piece of Monokote and it started out great but I ended up pulling the Balsarite off the wing when i went to remove wrinkles with a heat gun (no... I was careful and used a thick cloth while doing it)

Let me ask another question... would it be fool hardy to try and glass the entire wing (top and bottom) and use paint... one of the club guys recommended 3/4 oz fabric and something called System5 (boat epoxy). has anyone done that? given up on covering for paint.. do i need to glass the wing to paint? (a glass wing would be cool... seems to me like it would be impervious to rash, transport mishaps, etc). I am of course concerned that it will add way too much weight...

any info is much appreciated...

It's Systems3,, and they do sell marine grade epoxy and paints as well as a great waterborne polyurethane paint system as well as clear.

Glass/paint will add weight but not enough to worry about for that type of plane,, the issues is do yo want to put the time into it?

With Iron on, if there is a edge that doesn't over lap itself I'll wick in thin CA, like others suggest, that almost always holds it down just fine

good luck
