I had a question on my lipo batteries. I been recharging them on balance and was wondering if its OK to do.a discharge on my charger once awhile and wouldthat prolong the battery. I notice when I view all my cells on my charger I'm not getting the peak numbers for each cell and only on some cells.not all.

What kind of batteries?
How old are they, how many cycles?
What kind of charger?
Do you store you batteries at 50% when not being used for awhile?
What are you running your batteries in?

Doing a discharge is ok , and will not prolong the battery. It will do the opposite and use of one cycle.

I would noy cycle them for the heck of it.
As, said, it will only use up cycles.

These batteries are a complete different animal than NiMH.

When not in use, store them at 3.85V / cell.
That alone will make them last longer.

I have some 3 cell and 6 cell lipos, and I would say they are about 4 mos old, I have a hobby people multifunction charger that I use and the 3 cell batteries are used in my foamie airplanes and the 6 cells are used in my edge 540 3d plane. If you charge for a weekend flight and end up not going to the field for about 3 weeks is that good and if you do that how would i get them to 50% if I didnt use them?

Thanks,

3 weeks is too long inmop to leave packs stored. They would have to be discharged or used somehow. You could use bulbs and dvm , a discharger , a charger with discharge function or bleed them into other packs or even power a charger with them.

But I though it was said not to use the discharger function on the charger to discharge the batteries?

Many of us have made discharges just for this.

Most chargers can do it but I use my discharger.
Less stress on the charger and WAY faster.

This is what threw me off and why I responded the way I did. I thought you were just discharging for the sake of discharging "once in a while" and that will indeed use up a cycle. If , however you are going to store a full battery for 3 weeks then a discharge to half full will probably help battery life.

IM using the charger now, how do you make a discharger? I see my volts are dropping but does the charger know when to stop or I have to stop it?

You should have set the cut off before you started discharging.
Chargers are not all the same.
Mine (iCharger 306B) can be set up at what ever you want.

Stop your discharge at 3.85v / cell.

That is PER CELL for ALL LiPo no matter how many cells.

You can do the multipying.

http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/fb.asp?m=4027267 Mine would work on 3s packs , but not 6s packs because they were 12 volt bulbs. You'd also have to make sure you don't pull too much current or go too low voltage.

I tried the discharge on my charger and your right it takes forever would it be a problem if I hook up the batteries to my planes and run the plane in my garage until right voltage is reached? Also I have digital cell meter that plugs into the the reading port of the battery can this also be used while running the motor at the same time so I can see when the batteries have reached there limit?

That would work very well.

Great... so if I do charge batteries and don't and up using them how long should I let them sit before I have to drain them to 3.85 a cell? And I prolly asked this before is it good to balance charge your lipo every time you charge them or just a charge will do?

Most of the little cheap cell readers scroll thru the data , but only get the data when plugged in so don't rely on it being refreshed during the discharge unless you unplug and re-plug. OR just verify that the value is going Down. Some other readers will refresh without unplugging. It's easy to tell.
